Considering new radiator.

Guys, the only reason some of the prototype kits got the Turbonetics was the fact that the turbos from Garrett were on backorder. The ones from Turbonetics are basically the same turbo, but balanced to more exacting standards, and the Turbonetics logo stamped on. FP and BEGI have been known to use Air Research turbos (garrett turbo rebadged again). If you look a pictures of StuttersC's kit, it uses an Air Research turbo. The K&N I have came with my kit. You should be able to swap out your filter with a comparable cone filter. Now back on topic!

Yes, I have an Air Research turbo...

But, back to radiators and how they are neato...

Nolanspawn (Josh), I have your nipple. (boobs) hahaha! Anthony sent your new nipple out for your radiator, and I have it. We need to make arangements to get it to you.

jrodhotrod let us know how yours fits because with the ION FMIC there is not much space there between the fan and the piping so I am wondering if the rad will fit properly. I am thinking the fan will have to be changed so it would be usefull to know this because I plan on getting the AWR rad to later on. (spin)

Sorry it took so long.

Here is what I did. With the MSP radiator fans (they are different then the p5 radiator fans so they don't directly bolt on to the AWR radiator) I kept the passenger side at first and replaced the driver side. If I had cut the fan blades just a little (like a 1/4-1/3 inch I guess) it would have cleared the Ion piping just fine on the passenger side.

Instead I decided to go with 2 10" high CFM slim fans from summit racing made by permacool. They flow 1250 CFM each and leave LOTS of room for the piping.

So yes, you could probably make everything work with the stock fans, I am sure if you worked at it hard enough the driver side fan could somehow be adapted to fit as well. But I opted for the full performance increase of the high flow fans and knowing that I have lots of room for piping.

Can one of you guys w/ the AWR unit measure the top end tank of the stock vs AWR radiator. The prototype Mazdaspeed FMIC kit's hot pipe comes REALLY close to the radiator top end tank and I'd like to clear up whether or not the AWR unit will fit.

Thanks in advance!

-Searches thru past pics-
Do want comparison of the AWR top endtank vs. MSP radiator alone or AWR top endtank vs. MSP Radiator and Intercooler?

Just the top tanks compared. I have a feeling the AWR unit will be thicker than the stock end tank.

Thicker left to right or thicker front to rear? The radiator has a thicker core then the stock radiator and is definetly wider left to right. I'll measure it tomorrow and get you some dimensions.

u da man (drinks) thanks for the info, when are u going to go get a dyno? I wanna see the numbers (naughty)

Thanks for the info. I'm doing this in the next month or so.

Did the fans from Summit fit into the AWR mounting locations or did you have to do some work to get them to fit? Also, what cap did you end up using?

Thanks.

Peace...(hippy)

The Summit fans come with brackets that will work in the stock location with slight modification on the driver side. Otherwise you use these zip pull kind of things that you feed through the radiator to hold them on, or you could get some flexible metal strapping and make up your own brackets. On the passenger side I used the brackets that Permacool provided on top and use zip ties to attach them to the fine. seems to be very solid. I should probably get flexible strapping and make my own brackets at some point, but it holds very well.

Forgot to mention, I got the same cap as Linux. The pink Mazdaspeed 1.3 bar cap from CorkSport for the Automatic Protege, it's the calsonic fitting.

Ok, The CORE on the AWR is thicker then the CORE on the MSP radiator, but I didn't measure it.

The Cap tanks on the top measure as follows:

AWR - Approx 27" left to right and 2" front to rear
MSP (radiator only) - Approx 21 1/2" left to right and Top caps also measure 2" front to rear.

No problem man!

Dyno someday.... Probably not till after EMS goes in though.
