Just purchased a 2002 P5, classic red. I was waiting for the Spicy Orange Mazdaspeed and finally test drove one a few times. My impressions of the Speed: loved the color and the power and the stereo, hated the wheel hop around turns and the icy cold feel of the shifter. Didn't notice much torque steer, but with all of the wheel hop, I couldn't really tell.
I liked the P5. Really not much different from my '93 Protege LX, except the ride is a little more stable. Power seems about the same. The high end torque on long, steep grades seems to be less than my old Pro. (Perhaps this is due to the extra weight.)
Anyway, my decision came down to $$$. I saved nearly $6,000 opting for the P5. For me, the Mazdaspeed just wasn't worth that much more money.
