Candadian P5 speaker sizes

Hi everyone! I have recently purchased a Protege5 and am looking to replace the stock stereo speakers. I have heard that the speaker sizes are different for Canadian models. Would anyone happen to know what the sizes are?

I highly doubt they are any different in canada then any where else in the world. But I haven't seen one yet.

I just found out that they are all 5"x7"....what a dumbass size. Hardly anyone even carries these speakers!

Just about every brand has a 5x7 in atleast one of there lines. they should be easy to find. MOst ford vechicals use 5x7s so they have become very common. Also a 5x7 can be used to hold a 5 1/4 componenet very easily.
What speakers were you interested in that you want a 5x7 and couldn't find one?

on top of this....nearly everyone also makes a 6X8 now....and the frame size of nearly all 6X8's fit in the hole that the 5X7 does....in fact most 6X8's are so interchangable that the makers have put both mounting hole locations in the rims so you don't have to make new holes in the doors for the screws either.

NOW wait a minute....are you saying that the speakers in the rear doors of your P-5 are 5 X 7's? have you actually taken off a rear door panel and seen this for your self? as the hole in the doors is ROUND....and in the cars for the US they come with 6 inch rounds. and their are NO other mounting holes in the door....this would mean that the rear doors that are being put on the canadian models are either different...or they are drilling extra holes when they mount the speakers.

Only an adapter plate is needed to make the 5 1/4 componenet fit in the 5x7 space.

Hi everyone,
I drive a Canadian P5 and audio was my first upgrade. I have Alpine's SPR-176A 6.5" components in the front and they perform flawlessly, IMO. My installer has done P5's before and this seems to be a common scenario for them.

The comps are powered by a Clarion 201.2 200W amp and my Alpine SWS-1241D sealed sub is powered by a 401.2 400W amp bridged. The rears are powered off my deck as they are only for fill anyway. It's a relatively cheap setup I know, but it works for me so I'm happy.

BTW, there's plenty of room under the seats for these amps so it looks pretty stealthy and I can still get to the spare tire ;)

Hello MP5Alive and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

I know what you mean about the UNDER seat room...its where my amp is as well....there was a whole thread here a while back about underseat mounting.....its what made me go for that location.

You're right. I ended up buying 6x8's and they fit perfectly because of the extra holes on the frame of the speakers. They also sound alot better than the 5x7's that i listened to in the store. I bought 4 of them, but I haven't put the ones in the back doors yet so I'm hoping they actually are the same size speaker bays back there. (this is what the installers told me at best-buy). I also have a question....should i buy a new deck to power these speakers or an amp? Will a 50w per channel deck be enough to power 4 200 watt pioneers?

DONT QUOTE MAX POWER!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

OK, lets continue.

The rears will be 6" not 5x7, I'll put money on it, especaily since bestbuy told you. Not to bash BB or anything but they are so bad there managers come to tweeter to have there cars worked on. Its actualy very humorus. There managers and us sit around and make fun of half the people they have working in mobile over there.

If you need other features like cd changer control, sat radio control, pre-outs, independant sub volume control then go for the new headunit. If you don't care about any of that and you just want clearer sound with more volume then the amp is the way to go.

Sorry for the spaz at the begining there. I hate the BS power rating. NO pioneer 6x8 speaker will take 200 watts. They would nuke in a few minutes. Also no radio puts out 50 watts per channel. they are all around 20 at best. To put it in perspective a decent amp that can deliver a true 50x4 will be just about $350 US. Also If you want an amp with a real 50x4 then you need to upgrade the factory wire to the speakers.

yep yep yep....hope you kept your reciept for the speakers....you are going to find that the 5 X 7's/ 6 X 8's are not going to go in your back doors.....sorry.....you should have really popped off a door first....all those people at best buy were trying to do was sell you speakers....if I were YOU....I would track down the very sales person that sold them to you telling you that they would fit...so HE/SHE could do the paperwork to take them back...all the while listening to you tell them how they don't know their butts from a hole in the ground. I just hate it when sales people do this crap.

btw....if you want to consider just amping your stock headunit...it will work very well....and it does sound great.....I did it.....and here is a thread from the board that covers nearly every aspect of doing it.....

OK get this....

Sure enough you guys were right...the speakers for the back were the wrong size. They are actually 6 1/2". Anyways, Bestbuy initially gave me the second pair for 50% off, but when I returned the one pair they refunded me full price! Suckers...I get the last laugh. Then I went to Futureshop and bought a new deck for $45 less than it cost at bestbuy. Also, Bestbuy tried to convince me that I needed a $100 faceplate and harness kit that was a special order from the US. Futureshop told me that this was BS. So, simply by going across the street I saved about $130. I hate Bestbuy. They recently came to Canada and quite frankly they suck.

They are hands down one of the worst companies out there for service and support.

As some background info.
I worked at Best Buy about 2 years ago. The only training we recieved was two 2 hour sessions of watching video tapes on how to sell in general and how to sell the service plan.
I was PISSED. They told us nothing about the products at all. When I asked about the lack of training the manager told me people do there research other places and just come to bestbuy to purchase there product so we didn't need to know anything.

I quit within 3 weeks.

Tweeter is a hole different ball game. the sales guys go throughthe most comprehensive sales training in the industry. They have meeting every satureday morning to discuss new products and promotions and to practice sales. BB has meeting to see who sold the most service plans, one at the start of the day, one at the end and one every satureday.
To put it another way. Of the car salesmen at Tweeter, I know the least. In audio I can hold my own, but in remote starters and video I am week.

Glad that you got the last laugh on them....serves them right for feeding you BS....I would look at it as them paying you for the extra time you had to spend running back and forth.

as for the rear speakers....believe me...they are 6's.....yes 6 1/2 fit...as that is what I installed as well.....BUT....if you plan on removing the rain/water shields off of the stock speakers and installing them on your new speakers you will have to modify them for anything other than 5X7's for the fronts and 6's for the rears.

Do I really need to do that? I installed 6x8's in the front and the seem to fit perfectly. The plastic bracket around the speakers have two extra holes to make them fit 5x7 speaker bays. Will rain water get in there? I also scratched the s*** out of the inside of the door trying to clip the top part of the door cover back on...now it will probably rust too! Great...what a pain in the ass...next time I will just pay someone to do it for me.

believe it or not.....more water gets in your doors that you would probably like to know about, Personally I would recommend the rain guards, if you have them....but if not...what are you to do? its not like the aftermarket ones come with them....its probably not that big a deal......but seeing as how they were on the stock speakers...and they fit the replacements, I used them.
