cam gears

:
2001 323 Astina SP20 (P5)
well they have arrived.

they are installed. 8 degrees retard on the intake, 4 on the exhaust.

idles well so far from cold.

then - the engine got warm and i revved it up to redline. felt great, but then when i went back to idle i heard a rubbing sound. i reckon the belt has just moved a bit or, the cam gears rub the head cover...but i'll check it out tomorrow night.

initial impressions are : gee the pick up is quick :D

more to come this time tomorrow...

not sure yet. the reason being is that i'll be getting a full exhaust (2.5") within 2 months. i'd get a dyno run and then i'll have to get it again. but when i get the full exhaust i will have them dyno tuned. THAT will be very interesting!!

aim with the exhaust - 140whp+ ... most powerful NA P5 yar???

I can undestand that. How did you decide on the settings?

Get that exhaust and get it back on the dyno. You might just be!

I will be impressed with a Dyno. But, so far, you have done a good nice job on your car. Keep it comming.

Im questioning myself, how would I setup the cam gears for my turbo.

Where did you order it?

I know SR Mortor Sports has a set of cam gears out now
I would like to know how to set them up on a FI application too espeshally because of the Mazdaspeed/J-spec cams shafts i have

You would probably see gains if you were able to retard the exhuast cam 2-3 degrees. Turbo cars in general don't like overlap.

yeah I can see the logic in that, good thinking! Does anyone know how many degrees the stock over lap is?

I would like to know as well...maybe someone who is building a motor can degree them for us.

the cam gears everyone is selling is made by sunbelt. i bought mine through propartsusa.com and had a few issues.

igdrasil - you would want to prob advance the exhaust 2 deg and retard the intake 2 deg with stock cams...

ARunto - you had it the wrong way around. there's a thread where we discussed the cam gear adjustment at length about a month ago...

the stock overlap would be negative @ 0.050" (where most of them are measured. even with my big duration cams, i only have 6 degrees of overlap (cam event) or -1 degree of overlap (valve event).

Glad to hear things are looking up. I keep waiting to hear from those guys about what's going on with the cams. Tried calling again today, still waiting....

well all is fixed. i just added a very thin washer between the valve cover and the cam sensor. car runs perfectly.

initial impressions - mid range up feels stronger. redline is much better...probably around 5-8whp i'd guess

really need them dyno tuned, but i'll wait til i get the exhaust.

Wow... u r running a timing retard thats almost as big as mine. I would have thought that u would have a lower retard on the intake. But i am sure it has become quite quicker. I bet with perfecting the timing further u could see 10-20whp at least. Good job. (2thumbs)

NICE N/A all the way......Much respect to those who go N/A, the true tuning. How much you paid for the gears and was it hard to install.

i paid $290 through a GB on here.

install was pretty easy for me. probably a difficult beginner's job.

ark - yeah i needed so much retard to bring the powerband down a lot. me thing i'll probably have to retard it more...only the dyno will tell...

Awesome! Can't wait to hear the dyno results. =) Those things'll help out your aenemic low end once you hop on the dyno and start tuning. Awesome work, man. You're an inspiration to all us N/A folk!

awesome man im holding off on myinstall till i get all the cash together and get those gears. then ill do it all at once i think im going to install it myself... Ive been reading uo in it and i thnk i could do it. any suggestions on whati might need besides that im going to change the head gasket.

all you really need is time. it's pretty easy. just take your time. follow the workshop manual and my how-to on here. oh, most importantly, have a torque wrench
