BEGI Turbo Update Part 3

I've had great service from my dealer. They even ran a few diagnostics for free when I thought my mileage was lower than it should be. They've even answered BS questions for me because I'm not much of a car person and didn't care much about my car as long as it got me from A to B until I got my P5.

You also have to remember that people that have problems are more likely to say something than people not having problems.

1st MP3 in NH, Mazda dealers might work differently when it comes to warranty issues than the VW/Audi dealer I worked for. At the VW/Audi dealer the service and parts manager had say so in the yes/no category for warrantying a part to the customer. Then it was up to VW to pay the claim, if VW didn't, the dealer ate the cost.

If the warranty claim was questionable however, I sent the part to VW to be checked. It is the dealer that is screwing you if they don't want to warranty the claim. If the dealership had good customer service, they would do it. We changed out about a billion cup-holders that got sticky after people spilled soda all over them. Go figure...VW warrantied most of them, and asked for about half of them back. Same thing for missing hub-caps. We would grab an old hub-cap we had lying around, stomp on it and send it to VW. Mean while, we give the customer a new one for the one that got stolen or cracked on a curb 'cause the driver was a moron.

My dealership however, has a retard of a service manager and I won't go there for service. I asked simple questions about the MP3 and if they had any idea about how advanced the ignition timing might be. He told me the exhaust was what made the ten extra horsepower. Then he argued with me that the rest of the MP3 ECU and motor was stock Protege.

I won't go there for service. I use an independant Mazda mechanic that is absolutely the best guy I've meet as far as mechanics go.

Ok, now for my .02 cents:

I have no real issues with the BEGI kit to date- other than the fact that it was marketed at 8psi and I'm still at 6. I will soon go to 8 but that's after switching ECU's, Plugs, the FM 02 fix, AND running a high concentration of 101 gas. that part- I'm not too happy about. I wish we could've just done bigger injectors and reprogrammed ECU to start with.

1st- I'm guessing you have a leak. More that likely it's comming fromthe downpipe. Last night I had the problem of my car being SUPER loud! Sounded like an NA car with no exhaust. I checked everything and it was was fine except the downpipe fasteners. 2 of them had come off completely and one was about half off. :wtf:

I then tightened them and replaced them this morning and all is well again. Feels like a new car. Once I get the offroad downpipe in a few days- i'll be using self locking nutts or something to that effect.

I check the nuts once a week and all seemed OK last week. The cars not loud like no exhuast just make fairly loud clicking like the vlaves opening an closing but it is becoming more amplified.

I think I am also getting the new downpipe and maybe a specialy coated manifold to to keep it looking good.

hmmmmmm.....

Sounds good. Yeah, my manifold sure looks ugly now after a few thousand miles on the turbo. But then again, ahha I don't care. At least it's working well...

well, adding to the protege being reliable, so far i think the car kinda is, BUT, im sorry to whoever disagrees but the tranny does suck really bad. Crunches and hard to engage 1sr, 2nd and reverse, no matter if cold or hot (well it is worse on cold). Im waiting for thxgiving break to do the fix that linux told me (the shoockproof oil), and lets add that my tranny is stock and i hardly ever go past 5k in the MP3. Also i have owned 2 mazda miatas before and my family did own 2 mazdas 323 and one 626, and this is the first one that i can recall with this tranny quality.

But as far as the suspension goes, i believe thats the cost of having a modded suspension on any car. I have heard same reports (squeaks, noises) from Integras, civics, etc that have gas shocks and stiff suspension setups.

Also there were a lot of rattles developed but that can be easily fixed with a good ear, a screwdriver and lots of time. I got rid of 4 rattles this last weekend, right now im just missing one in the back of the car.

Knock on wood my tranny has not given me any problems...I agree with stutters on this. If you abuse the thing and peel out at every stop light you will have accelerated wear. I have been putting down double the torque figures on my car over a stocker and I have had no problems. Just really bald tires every 5000 miles

What?!?! Someone actually read what I typed? Oh no...

Oh wait, on topic: "Device" is now isntalled correctly...Just have to wait for the toluene to get out of the tank to determine if the correct install gets rid of the knock over 5000 in 3 and 4. Tested this afternoon, and I don't think I heard knock. It didn't sound the same as it did in GJ. It sounded like the valves smacking around or something rattling, and it wasn't over 5000, it seemed to be at part throttle on boost with a little load pushing it. That's why I don't think it was ping.

Then again, I am going ever so slightly deaf and might not be able to here a car crash anymore so it might be pinging like no tomorrow and my poor little ears can't hear s***.

Oh well, looks like another trip to GJ and more fun at FM's shop!!:D And real dyno run to see what's going down...

Soon my young padiwan learner...Soon.

I hope at any rate!:p

Tonight I had to get gas and I was no where near my 101 octane station so I put about 6 gallons of 91 in... Right away I heard knock in 3rd and 4th at about 4.5 K..

I swear, knock is so gay. I'm seriously now awaiting FM's re-programmed ECU and larger injectors.

Now up to the mobile to get some 101!!!!

damn is that 101 octane not expensive as hell... we got some 100 octane here and its like 3.99 a gallon

I heard somewhere that the stock ECU and MAFS can only handle a 15% variance from stock air flow pressure. Could this be why the FM/Begi Turbo kit is causing ping? If this is true - shouldn't they be giving the reprogrammed ECU or a piggyback unit to current FM Turbo owners for free? Also, if this is true, I wonder how much of the turbo benefit is not being realized.

The MAF is in front of, or upstream from the turbo. So it does not "see" the boost.

The advanced timing in the MP3 is what is causing the ping. FM is working on a way for the Protege/MP3 to use the turbo to its best advantage. Everyone who has the BEGI/FM turbo kit so far is a guinea pig and is testing the set up. It takes time to reverse engineer away around the stock ECU. The "device" works fine for normal Protege's, just not that well on the MP3, maybe...

As for giving the reprogrammed ECU for free, why? Everyone who has the kit so far has paid for what they got. An ECU is expensive as heck, we haven't paid for one...Yet. So is a stand alone set up.

As far as how much turbo benefit is not being realized, well, that would be a lot since the kit can handle 8 psi, and not very many of us are running that yet.

thx for answering the questions - I didn't really expect to point out something everyone else had missed, just curious as to how it all worked. I'm glad about all those peeps who have already bought the turbo so that when I get mine, they can have all the bugs worked out :)

Thanks Turbo guys!

Chris, on the dyno when we heard the ping the computer should have been open loop. In that situation, the voltage clamp won't actually do anything. So I wouldn't get your hopes up. Remember that on our first test drive on the road we couldn't hear ping. That hood's pretty well insulated plus I think we'd mixed the toluene by then...

Once we're back from CA, we might be interested in swapping ECUs for a while so we can try something on yours. Nothing to the ECU itself, but we need a pseudo-MP3 to test it.

I'm sorry that Corky marketed the kit as an 8 psi MP3 kit from the beginning. That may have been true for a sea-level Texas car, but I don't think it applies across the US. We're doing what we can.

The Track Dog is on the dyno right now. That thing sounds like the world is ending - seriously mean. We're having trouble with our dyno, but I've seen one partial run with 288 whp/278 ft/lbs at 12 psi...
