By the way, my Ipod sounds fantastic through the AuxMod. That stock radio sounds really good with quality speakers and some amplification.

Just pointing out that this is in regards to the facotry 3's radio, although I would argue the same for the protege.

I HAVE to get this. I just got a 30GB Dell Jukebox today, and I had the FM transmitted and was SERIOIUSLY disspointed in the reception and sound quality. This is a GOD SEND! Should I wait for the advanced or get the basic?

Just for the record, the AuxMod basic works perfectly in my Mazda Astina of 2002 (model BJ) as sold in Australia.

Installation ideas

I got my Auxmod a couple of months back (I was #800). Once I finally got the radio out of the dash it was easy to install and works great.

I did install a ground loop isolator; for $20 (Australian) there wasn't much point in risking alternator whine. It fits in the MD/tape bay in front of the Auxmod, held in by cable ties.

Rather than have the GLI plugged into the Auxmod with connectors and more adapters to run the cable to the GLI, I removed the 3.5mm socket from the Auxmod board and cut the connectors off the GLI, then soldered the GLI cable directly to the Auxmod. Similarly I removed the input cables for the GLI and ran a longer cable. Connectors can become unreliable with vibration.

The only downside is that I have to turn the volume on my iRiver media player up quite a lot from where I use it with headphones. I don't know if this is caused by the GLI or the radio/Auxmod. It might be worth fitting a small preamp somewhere.

Just some ideas. The unit works great. FM transmitters were very disappointing in this car.

I was #525 on the AuxMod wait list. I waited several months, then received an email that it was on the way. Arrived a few days later. I had a mobile audio shop install it and it sounds great. Here's why:

I also had them install a Belkin Auto Kit along with it. The kit connects to the car lighter socket, has an line-out jack, an amplifier, and connects to the iPod DOCK, allowing for clean, digital audio out through the line out jack. The shop soldered the Belkin unit to the deck under the dash, connected the line out to the AuxMod, and left the dock connector coming through the dash.

I HIGHLY recommend this approach. It not only charges the iPod, but the clean, powerful audio through the dock connector sounds awesome. All that comes out through the dash is the dock connector, which folds away into the little cavity behind the cupholders.

Only bummer is no device control, but that's OK. Belkin unit is $28 at Amazon.

I just received an e-mail from the AuxMod people that said my AuxMod was ready to ship (after I pay). I'll probably do this installation myself since I've taken out my stereo before to install he OEM 6 CD changer. I'd like to run the audio cable to the slot right under the ash tray. What's the best way to go about doing that?

AuxMod installed exactly as described (difficulties in getting the radio out aside - see related thread,) works exactly as described and takes the sound of my previously FM powered XM satellite up about 10 notches.

The stereo is fairly easy to remove. There is a good description here: http://nopaper.net/space/start/2005-08-14/1

I found that the removal tool was not quite engaging the springs holding the stereo in place. By assuming the stereo installer's yoga position and sticking my head under the driver's side dash, you can see the springs quite clearly, make sure that the removal tools are engaged and then can pop the stereo right out.

My Auxmod came in less than a week. I installed it in less than 20 minutes. Sounds 100% times better than using the fm modulator on my XM SkyFi2.

I simply popped the 2 caps on each side of the radio,
...popped the cap off of the bottom part of the radio (tape deck area),
...stuck some small precision screwdrivers in the 4 holes,
...I squeezed the screwdrivers inward and had someone else stick their hand through the bottom (tape deck area) and pull out the radio.
..connected the aux mod, connected a y adapter to connect to the ground loop iso, back to another y adapter..to my SkyFi2. My XM never sounded better.

Kudos for AUXMOD...it's the shiznit...

The CD player will not work again until you turn the power on the HU off and then back on again correct? You cannot "toggle" back to the CD player using the HU button? I don't have to depower the whole car just to get it to reset do I?

No it doesn't effect the cd player at all. To use the auxmod you just press the "md/tape" button.
