Anyone else want to try this? Car And Audio Magazine Mazda5 Remake

+1, it looks like a very detailed job, just the overall design behind it is not my cup of tea, too much stuff going on...

What an install!

Have to say very good attention to detail, quality workmanship, and very creative! But why don't I like it? (dunno)

Just a step away from the fun-fur we used to customize our interiors with in the 70's.

Can't say I'm a fan of those big bulkheads created out of the dash. The work quality looks fabulous, though.

I was overly impressed with the dash area, loved the exterior paint job. The dash cover (suede or ??) didn't do anything for me nor the moving of the AC and instrument cluster. Would still like to hear that sound system though. The man definitely has some skills and patience to strip the 5 down to nothing, and then build it back. I would have forgotten where half of the pieces were, much less where they went in the car.

The Toyota Echo gauges? The lack of vents to defog the windshield? The difficult to see radio display on top of the steering wheel? The A/C knobs? ;)

But I agree, that grounding design calls for an awesome sound...

OK, gotcha, but now, check the distance between the "custom" vents and the windshield, then combine that with the OEM power of the Mazda5 HVAC

Anyway, the audio setup seems to be brilliant but the rest :(

I thought too about the wisdom of the sub being in the front; low frequency bass waves take some distance to really hit hard, which is why you want high freq tweeters close to you. bass source should be located farther away.
I'm thinking too the car is illegal now w/o the federally mandated passenger airbag.

Obviously he never intends to drive in the rain but I would never get rid of the rear wiper for ANY reason. Obviously I like the backup camera idea :) but still!

Quality work, but Mazda has designed the ergonomics of the dashboard pretty well. Reinventing the wheel means you still have...a wheel.

How I would change the MZ5 interior is with better quality materials, not a different layout.

Agreed! Center gauges suck, and swapping them with the climate readout is just silly. However, I would change the center console, it is not well thought out. There should be a door over the rear storage area for security, there should still be cupholders over the rear vents because it sucks to slide the middle seat if there are drinks in the table ones, the existing front cupholders should be side by side towards the dash with an open area behind it and that little shelf should be turned into something useful, like maybe make it bigger with a door to conceal the 12v socket and aux input plus double as a pocket for your MP3 player/Ipod.

Finally a flat surface in front of the steering wheel for my gps equipped laptop or Ipad, or portable dvd player.
