Yeah, on a harder crop it was worse... I'm really not sure why. It was cropped in CS4.

Well the flower looks to be out of focus. Maybe just high ISO and low shutter speed? Just super soft I guess.

how bout I send you the ones i just shot instead? I pulled over a lamp and shot with a lot smaller ap. PM me an email. I'll send you the raw. (btw the first one was strait out of cam.
am I correcting in think you need to seriously jack up the F-stop to shoot a macro, or am I doing something else wrong?

Are you shooting handheld or on a tripod? It still looks out of focus. Maybe its just my eyes...idk just doesn't look nearly as sharp as it should.
If you are shooting handheld, try a tripod, 2 sec timer/remote, and an exp delay mode if you can find it (raises the mirror before the shutter to reduce vibes even more).
The lighting was nice and even in the first, and not bad in the second (read little harsher with bad shadows on the right of the flower).
The lack of clarity is the only thing buggin me.

the exposure is over 6 seconds (before I turned the ISO up I had it up to 30). its on a (cheap) tripod, 10 second delay. Honestly I'm wondering if it isn't the lens, as its certainly not a 'high' quality lens.

It's your lens. Sorry to say.
Turn off your image stabilization..if it has any
Manual focus
Put it on a timer
Lowest possible ISO
Do a mirror lockup as well
Set it to Aperture Priority.... so your camera determines the shutter speed.
Let it shoot and do not touch the camera.
Shoot at around F6.3 up to about F10 and see if the image improves.
Good luck man.
