A stupid question for the audience

:
2012 Mazda5 Sport AT
So, I like my Mazda5. I've had a steady job for the past few years, my first real job out of college. With my parents' help, I bought the Mazda5 back in 2011. At the time I needed the space for me, my wife, and our family of three dogs. A year ago, one of our dogs succumbed to cancer, so now we only have two. I also was driving 120 miles/day for work with a carpool and needed something relatively efficient, as my previous vehicle was a Tahoe and cost an arm and a leg to fuel up. I liked the 3 but needed the space of the 5. I also found that the 5 was slightly better for me at 6'1". The seat travel on the 5 could be longer, but the telescoping steering wheel on the 3 feels a little too short. The back seat of the 3 is also pretty small, and while I don't carry more than two people most of the time it's nice to be able to have space for four. The wife is about 9 or 10 inches shorter than me and likes how the 5 fits her and she can see out if it perfectly fine. She drives an old cute-ute and likes to sit up higher than in a car, which she didn't like about the 3. The wife also can't really drive stick, and she needs to drive the car once or twice a week. Now all that said, I test-drove a Mazdaspeed3 (finally) about a month ago. It was awesome. It spurred my decision to break down and purchase my Speed3 wheels. My intention is to eventually fit the 5 with Speed3 sway bars and front brakes, but I'm also thinking about how much money and work that actually entails for little real gain. Yeah, it'll be better than a stock 5, but so what? I'm having a hard time reconciling my desires for a faster, better-handling car with the reality of the results. I love to drive, and we like to take road trips, do light hiking, go kayaking, and such things, all of which the 5 does reasonably well. When I was trying to purchase a car, what I really wanted to do was get a WRX. I enjoy having AWD and having the ability to tackle light trails and gravel roads without worrying, and the turbo power is just fun. I enjoy having SUVs and pickups, too, as I often haul junk around for projects and friends, like the 500 bricks I picked up for my outdoor fireplace.

Now my job is steady, and I'll have it at least another year. But most likely in a year or two we'll be moving elsewhere, where she'll have a job and I will not. I don't know what the future will bring in terms of a job, as it's a complete unknown what will happen when we move. The practical side of me says, "keep the 5, pay it off" so when we move, I'll have a car and our finances will be more secure. The childish side of me says, "get a fun car while you can". To me, a fun car is either a Speed3 or an Xterra (or something similar). I love what both have to offer. I looked at trading my 5 in one day, and the result was very disappointing. My car has 38k miles on it. Yeah, that's a lot, but it's also really a 2011, even though it's a 2012 model. I got it right after the 2012s came out back in early 2011. Yes, it's the Sport trim and yes it has miles, but still. I was offered 11.5k for it, and I owe only a couple thousand less than that. So my trade-in would only be about 2 or 2.5k, which just seems absurd to me. The practical side of me just screams, "that's stupid!" when I think about trying to trade it in on a Speed3, as much fun as it is to drive.

Finally, my question is this: do I try and trade in my 2012 Mazda5 on a (used) Speed3 or do I keep it for another decade?

I think this is a no brainer. My advice is to keep the Mazda5. You can't go dreaming about a huge new expensive of a Mazdaspeed3 when your near future is knowingly uncertain, financially. It's crazy to make a speed3 purchase decision in your case. My 2cents.

The only stupid question is the one you didnt ask

Honestly it does not sounds like you are financially stable to consider anything else at this point. Having a job for 1 year is not stable IMO. You happen to have a Mz5 so stick with it. Don’t limit yourself in thinking that you can only ‘have fun’ now. Also, the cost of ownership for a MS3 will be MUCH higher (premium gas/fluids, higher cost components, higher insurance -this is a big one, etc.). Also, trying to turn a Mz5 into a MS3 is also not cost effective BUT if can DIY and upgrade parts during routine maintenance, then it is a no-brainer. For example, I was due for pads and rotors. The cost to upgrade to MS3 brakes is just the cost of calipers, which goes for $200/shipped on ebay. I got mine for $180 and have seen cheaper and choose to add additional items b/c I wanted too. Equivalent MS3 parts (i.e. rotors and pads) cost a little bit more than Mz5 but we’re talking about a peanuts difference. The MS3 RSB can be hard for dirt cheap if you hunt around. The biggest elephant is power. If you MUST have power (straight line acceleration), then you will never be happy b/c you’ll want to add more and more, things break and require more maintenace = more money. Learn to DIY and shop around for used parts and you can do a lot for very little money.

as has been said, keep the Mazda5 and pay it off. it is a very capable car, and can be turned into a very fun car with very little work. keep the front brakes as is - dont waste the money on the speed3 version. get H&R springs and a set of speed3 sway bars, and MAYBE a set of speed3 wheels and tires, and the mazda5 will be a great commuter car. if you can't swing the speed3 wheels and tires, get a nice set of 215/50-17 tires for the stock wheels.

(iagree)

You know what, I'm pretty much in the same boat, not to mention my wife can't drive a manual either. My 2nd son was born last night at 9:18PM, so now I have the advantage of a renewed perspective of life. Matter of fact I am feverishly typing this from the hospital room on my iPad, as my wife just asked me "What are you doing?" LoL I too am looking for MS3 wheels for my 5 (as many of you already know). The answer to your question is simple: keep your 5 and do moderate mods that won't break the bank, won't void a warranty, and don't look cheesy (you've all seen the Chevy Cavalier with the Autozone stickers and fake chrome in the parking lot, or the '96 Corolla with the erector set wing badly drilled into the trunk).

Now that I have 2 children I will be needing my 5 more than ever. Now my job situation is very stable, to give you an idea during the whole recession thing that started back in 2007, we only had to give up our pay raise for one year but my company didn't lay anyone off. It's a good sized company. I'm grateful for that.

If your job outlook does improve, you can always go CPO on a BMW and you get all the goodies of German car ownership at a reduced cost. You can still further mod a Bimmer for more fun.

Lastly, I have owned/driven completely lethargic cars in the past. While the 5 is by no means a speed demon, it can hustle if you know how to row the gears and plan ahead. Put another way, when you drive past large minivans with V6es that don't potentially have the same handling or econoboxes like the Corolla, Yaris, Fit, Sentra, Priuses, etc. you can feel all smug that your not driving one of those... Thank the Car Gods. So you really are not that bad off after all. :p

Since you asked for advice/opinion, so I'm going to echo what many said already.

Keep the Mazda5 and use it as intended - an inexpensive, versatile but still fun to drive vehicle. Your ideal car sounds like a sporty wagon. There are lots of choices out there, but they are all mucho $$$, and it sounds like you are not 100% financially stable yet. When you get there, and you have no life-altering events in between (kids, more/less pets, etc.), there will be lots of great used sport-wagons that will be affordable.

FWIW, up until recently, I had the "ideal" vehicle for me - 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero wagon, 5-speed, 250 hp. I could get 30mpg highway if I took it easy, haul bikes, dogs, kids, a fridge - you name it. Tight handling and plenty of power. Best seats I've ever sat on. That was with 2 dogs & 2 daughters. My wife had a 2002 Saab 9-3SE 5-door, so she could fit both kids & dogs as well, but just a bit tighter.

Then our son was born in November...

So, the Saab 9-3 was sold, and the Mazda5 Sport 6-sp joined the fleet. It's no Saab, but it is inexpensive, gets decent fuel economy, has acceptable power, holds all 3 car seats, and can be configured for 2 kids/2 dogs, 3 kids/groceries, and will eventually get a roof rack for road trips. I wanted a manual transmission, so that's what we got.

Is it it perfect - no, but it does the job and I actually like driving it (though not as much as the Saab).

Awesome!!! Congratulations!!!

I've got two boys as well (5 and 3, now... plus their sister, almost 1), and it's just great. So much fun!

To the OP... if you were hoping for some different answers, you should probably post in a Speed 3 forum!!

@ OP, I'm in similar situation as you, young married with stable job but with the 5 on finance. Forget trading in because you lose so much value. Just pay it off and be happy that you have a car at all. I wouldn't even bother with the mods because it's just money down the drain. It doesn't add a single penny if you ever decide to trade in and IMO it's not really worth modding out a minivan (the thought has crossed my mind). You will majorly regret spending that money if you can't secure a job later on down the road.

Wait til you can afford to buy a fun car straight out with cash without jeopardizing your family's finances. It will be much more satisfying this way.

On another note, I would stay far away from used luxury cars like BMWs because maintenance costs are ridiculous. If you want fun to drive budget car, consider used miata or the 11+ V6 stang.
