99 Protege Rear Disc

:
2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Its there a kit or a way to convert over to rear disc, these drum brakes are killin me. They sqeek and they look really dumb with my wheels, plus disc breathes much better than drum. I can find kits online, but they are 4 piston kits and the handbrake will not work with them. One I need hand brake for parking and I really dont need 4 piston rear brakes with stock front brakes, plus 1400 bucks for just the rear kit is way too much. So any help would be awesome!

Thanks in adavnce!

Yes, you can swap the entire rear off of any 3rd gen Protege.

In reality you will nee to convert to a 5 bolt hub, which means new rims...

yes it can aussie 1.8litre is 4x100 with 4 wheel discs with same rotor dimensions as 5 lug sp20. to convert to 5 lug over here we just swap hubs and rotors so you could basically get stubs, brakes, master cylinder and proportioning valve off a protege5 then swap for 4 lug aussie hubs and rotors from a 4 wheel disc bj. plenty listed on ebay.

aussie 1.8L? Can you tell me what kind of car that is and if there are certain year models I can use. My drum brakes are sqeekin worse now and I refuse to buy shoes and drums. I guess its time to start planing on doing this. Will I need new brake lines or anything? Never done this kind of transfer before totaly clueless on what to do. I got the skilld of mechanics just not changing brakes like this. Will I need new lines or anything I noticed whatyou said above. Just wondering if there are small details ill need. Does the hub and everything bolt on? Or will I be fabricating things?

Bare bones swap parts for 5 lug rear disc:

Front: P5 front hubs can be pressed into a 4lug knuckle with a p5 or 4 lug wheel bearing. Everything is the exact same.

Rear: p5 knuckle, caliper and rotor, hub, brake line and e brake cable.

That's it. Everything is the exact same.

click my signature link and check my build thread, my car is a bj2 j48 with fp-de 1.8litre engine and 4 lug wheels from factory. in australia unless it's sp20 then the bj's were 4 lug.

Any rough ideas on about what I can look to spend doing this with keeping 4 lug. No need of master cyl or anything? Just need hubs and knuckles basicly. Brake lines will hook up and everything?

There is a way to do it, but it's costly and pointless imo. It's on another forum and I can't post a link

I once thought of doing the swap while keeping 4-lug. I was in the same boat, just bought brand new wheels and tires, but I hated the rear drums. After running the numbers, it was right around 1k for everything. So I went to craigslist found a P5 part out. Picked up everything needed for about 150 and bought some nicer 5-lug wheels for 600. Sold the 4-lug wheels for 450 and made some money back. It ls just smarter to buy 5-lug. Not to mention, good luck finding parts why you warp the rotors or the pads go bad with the one of a kind 4-lug rear disc protege

Also has anyone changed thier portioning valve when doing this? Does anyine make a adjustible one for our brake system? I would like to go to a 60/40 ratio. And thanks for all the info! I gotta keep my 4 lugs though, one of a kind wheels around these parts. I have never seen wheels like mine around here my whole life and I have lived all over oklahoma. I'm sure someone has them but everyone that has seen my wheels loves them and hasn't ever seen any like mine. Just gotta keep em. Lol

got me curious now pics?

I remember those. Really liked them at the time and still do. Now I'm curious to see how it looks on a protege.

Hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of cropping them a bit and removing the license plate numbers.
