5 speed tranny service..

Anyone know how to change the tranny fluid in the p-5? Kinda don't want the dealer doing it and reeming me for c-note when I'm sure I can do it myself. I have almost 30,000 miles so it is almost do.

Thanks,

Patrick

It's easy.

There's a thread on this board with pictures. On the bottom of the tranny, on the passenger side, there is a 14mm (?) bolt that is your drain plug. On the front side of the tranny, quite close to the drain plug is the fill plug. Remove both of these (with a catch bin underneath). Let it all drain out. Put the drain plug back in, fill in via the fill hole (big pain in the butt, and it seems it uses more than 3qts).

Put the fill plug back in and drive away :)

P.S. Go do a search, and you should be able to find the pictures.

Arkos had it right on the money for the procedure...

The drain plug is pretty big though, IIRC it is either a 23 or 24mm bolt. The fill plug is similar in size....

The manual calls for 2.83 qts. of fluid, so 3 qts. should be all you'll need. Just make sure when you fill it up that you can feel the fluid with your finger through the fill hole. (The fill hole is on the front of the tranny housing.)

The torque specs for the drain and fill plugs both is 29 to 43 ft/lbs. You might want to pick up a new washer from mazda for both while you are at it too...

Good luck!
