01 Protege ES
I'm currently looking at a 01 Protege ES, it's in my yard right now. I have it for a little bit. The only neutral is when the clutch is pushed in. I can go from 3rd and 4th without the clutch while driving and it doesn't do a thing. With or without the clutch it won't let me in 1st, 2nd, 5th, or reverse. Occasionally I can get into 1st or reverse but it wants to stall out like it's trying to run in two gears. When it's in reverse it still tries to move forward and stalls. The owner thinks it's a linkage, but if it was a linkage, I should be able to go into every gear without it doing anything. I was doing some research and something came up about that it's a shifter fork? Can anyone confirm that's what they think it is. Can I replace a shifter fork or do I need a new transmission? Anyone do this before? Anyone know what it's going to cost to fix?

When i ordered my transmission from a salvage yard after about 3k miles and some heavy driving this happend to me , it wouldn't come out of 3rd gear and only would go into neutral when the clutch was pushed in. The linkage was fine and so was the shift fork, it ended up being something internal in the transmission and they sent me a new one because it was under warrenty. If you can take the linkage off and go where it connects to the transmission and see if you can move it by hand.

dissconect the linkage from where it connects to the transmission then move the pice on the transmission that has the rubber boot on it. Or you can just go under the car and have someone shift it and see if the part that comes out of the transmission with the boot on it moves if it does its not your linkage.

i had the exact same issue and i saved myself the trouble and bought a used trans for 100 and sold the broken one for parts for 100.

it is likely a shifter fork but id just go on the look out for a used trans, best of luck and pm me if you need any help.
