Would 225/45R17 winter tire fit Mazda5? Looking at winter tire and it seems discount tire direct have the cheapest package in that size instead of 205/50R17 that came stock with the car.

Anybody know the effect of TPMS on 2010 model that have stability control? I heard on some cars it would disable stability control which is I could not believe because you would more likely need stability control if you have a blow out.

225/45 may be too wide for a 6.5" wide rim, and wider tires = worse winter traction.

Consider pricing 16" tires + rims as well, it may cost maybe $100 to $200 more in the short term but you'll save $80 per season to have tires remounted and rebalanced in the long run.

I am getting the whole package wheel and TPMS sensor. I know the wider footprint would make the tire work harder and hyroplane more but the handling would not suffer as much as skinnier tire too.

16" package are not any cheaper nowdays.

The 16" will be more forgiving in the snow. When rubber gets cold, it gets ridged, so you want as much sidewall as possible to allow the maximum flexing of the sidewall you can get. Also, wider tires are great for sand dunes, but I would feel deathly afraid of riding over the snow instead of pushing it out through the tire grooves. Might as well keep the all season tires on if you go wider.

I think I am going to end up with slightly used 215/55R16 Dunlop Winter sport 3D. Got a good deal from Craigslist.

Thaxman, My Mazda5 replace a 93 Accord Wagon 5MT that have been a really good car to us. Its impossible to find a good simple wagon with manual transmission in US these days that is why we end up with the 5. I hope the mazda5 would be as good as the accord.

I doubt you will be disappointed. Its been good to us, excepting the issues we have had covered under the '06 extended "we're not sure if we worked all the bugs out" warranty. Only post-warranty worries I have now are scraping in the rear over road dips at normal speeds and now the LF suspension is knocking over uneven road. It may be a wheel bearing, as other '06 owners have reported bad bearings in the past. Thinking I'll take it to a suspension shop for a 1st opinion.
