2008 Mazda5 Sport Automatic - What Miles Per Quart of Oil Are You Getting?

I have a 2008 Mazda5 Sport, automatic, 58,300 miles, purchased new from dealer. All oil and typical maintenance performed by dealer.

I had to add almost a full (2/3) quart of oil today to bring the reading on the dipstick up to full...I really dislike these dipsticks, they are difficult for me to truly gauge the actual oil reading...is it just me? This is not the first time I have added oil between changes.

Whatever, I have been watching the usage between the last refill at the dealer. I check it before we leave the dealer, then after i return home, I check it again.

It is my wife's car and she is a very careful driver(angel)...no fast starts or hard driving. No extended warmups (we keep it in the garage). I take it out weekly to make sure it is brought up to speed for some period of time. We have taken a few extended trips over the years, but nothing recently.

It has only recently since hitting 45,000 miles have I noticed the change in the oil usage. There is no smoke on start up or acceleration. Neither is there any tell-tale indicators of oil leaking or burning (oil on the ground or oily tail pipe). No loss of power or warning lights or increase gas usage...I think this about covers it.

What are the rest of you getting before having to add oil?
Thanks for any comments.

I have an 06 with 66K miles. 2nd owner from 29K and 4 1/2 years. Do all my own oil changes using full synthetic at 5K-7K intervals & burn no oil.
Have you checked for oil in your water?

Mine is as 06 also with 145K, does not burn or lose oil. Only real way to gauge usage is to measure what you are getting out of the pan at oil change. Going by the dipstick is a fools game as it is impossible to check the level at exactly the same conditions every time. I suggest shortening your OCI to 3K for two oil changes, carefully measure what comes out of the engine. If no usage, go to 5K OCI and measure again. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Try this. After warming up the car, let it sit for a few mins for oil to settle. Open the oil filler cap, then pull out the dip stick. I take the 3rd measurement bc the pulling/inserting leaves oil in the tube which gets on the stick.

I also have an 08 Sport 5AT. I currently have 123k or so and just started adding about a 1/4 of a quart between oil changes every 4k miles. I'm pretty surprised it doesn't burn more at this mileage considering the light 5w20 oil that is recommended.

I am using your recommendation and did see a change in the reading. Glad I didn't add any oil. Gotta be careful with measuring the oil. It is time for an oil change and I will check to see what the level is after it is changed and I drive it. Had the dealer do oil change from the beginning and I will be more attentive to the oil level after the service.
Thanks for the advice
