1994 Mazda Protege
I'm trying to install the power steering/A-C belt on my 94 Protege, but I can't seem to get it to go on, it's too tight.

I have the adjuster on the power steering pump completely slack (with no more room for movement -- it's pivoted right up against the oil pan, no more room to move), but the belt won't slip on.

I understand there are two belts that may fit, depending on whether it's SOHC (39.5") or DOHC(40"). That seems to be about how much I'm short -- I have the 39.5" belt, meant for the SOHC engine. The old belt I pulled off the car was the 39.5", that's why I purchased the exact match. But it won't go on!!

1) Is there some secret trick to get this belt to fit. I would think the belt would have enough play to easily slip on, then would tighten when I take up the slack.
2) How can i determine if the car is dual or single cam? There's no markings on the valve cover. It does day 16-valve...

Any thoughts? Replacing this belt should have taken 1/2 hour!

Resolved this myself. I found the answer on another forum -- apparently I didn't loosen the adjuster enough to swing the power steering pump out of the way. Got 'er done.
