Ok, so at work I get an e-mail saying that the company will now have a day off for Martin Luther Kings BD. Now to me this is great as any day off is cool but Mr. King was a great man and died for his beliefs.

Now, the next next paragraph is what I want your opinion on. It states "Unfortunatly we will no longer have a day off for Presidents Day".

I have my own feelings on this but I would like to see what others think.

Wow, thats just plain offensive if you ask me. Where do you work, and why are they so stupid?? Is there any way you can submit a formal complaint or something like that??

Funny to see the s*** that happens when PC and real world finance smack into each other... reality is that most companies set aside so many "holidays" - some give 13, some 10, some 350 (Government Employees )

Your HR bean counter had to sit there and decide which holiday got screwed... figured more people would b**** if MLK didnt get a holiday than if President's day didnt... right/wrong? *shrug* - I wouldnt complain too much if I were you... the way PC is going Christmas Day will soon be removed as a holiday as it could be offensive to those that arent Christian- I mean we cant call it Merry Christmas but Happy Holidays... I give the bird to that one: If me saying Merry Christmas to you offends you then BITE ME! Im like WTF? Why would I be offended if someone told me Happy Hannuka or Happy Quanza or Happy Ramadan...

I love working for myself, but I miss days off, let alone paid days off. s***, "off time" is pretty much gone. Its now "not making any money time".

Back when I worked for the man making software, the company I worked for was consumed by a larger one. One of the days off we lost was MLK day. I responded to an email thread in which someone asked why, and I replied (in jest) that <insert name of large sw company here> obviously hated black people. HR invited me in for a little chat...

Of course I can read and post to forums like this as much as I want, but its less satisfying than it was.

I'm actually OK with it... I mean, President's day always seemed like a weak 'holiday' anyway. Far too vague for me. There are certain historical figures (MLK being one) that deserve to have their own day... the rest could be lumped into one day I suppose... but it's not as essential as honoring a guy like MLK.

As for those who are calling it PC or whatever... put yourselves in the shoes of a black man/woman and see if your mindset changes.

Personally, I've never heard of getting MLK's birthday off. Not saying I agree or disagree, just never knew.

Where I work we have PTO days - your vacation, sick & holidays are lumped into one giant sum. You pick and choose which days you wish to take off. The office is closed for only three days in the year - Thanksgiving day, Christmas day, and New Years day. I like this system alot more than the designated holidays - then people can prioritize what days are most important to them personally.

That's a really good idea and so flexible to fit an individual's needs.

IMO, MLKBD is more than just about a person's birthday and is a way of remembering and honoring the US civil rights movement. It could potentially have a much greater meaning to others too. IMHO of course...

I like that Idea. Where I work, we get New Years day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas day - no President's day or MLK day. Me, I'm Irish and I take St. Patricks day off....and the day after. As for MLK day, I would not mind having it off as long as I do not lose any other day off. Now, if they said I would be given MLK day off and then not allowed to take off for St Paddy's day, those would be fighting words.

The OP is losing one cold three day weekend for a just as cold three day weekend a month earlier. I have never heard of anyone truly celebrating either holiday so whats the diff?
