Yay! We're The Worst Out There

As far as maps are concerned TomTom is top notch. I've been using portable TomTom units for years so for me it was a very easy transition and I am the type to actually type in addresses before I leave and it gives me the best routes around any traffic with the updates. I like it and am very happy with it.

Our experiences could not be more different. Maybe TomTom maps are better on the East Coast, where I live and travel the map data is satisfactory but the maps are completely unusable.

As an example of the kind of issue that makes the map unusable, there is a 60 mile long State Highway (SR 542) in Washington state that was first paved in the 1920's and has been in continuous use ever since. It is a very popular tourist route in the summer and in the winter it is the only access to the most northern Ski Area in the State and it serves numerous communities. It is plowed continuously all winter long. But the road does not show up on my TomTom, just empty wilderness. Now the TomTom map knows this road exists, it just won't show it to you unless you zoom into the neighborhood level. There is no setting that will fix this most serious flaw (and the flaw is not specific to this one highway).

Yes, the TomTom has basic competence navigating address to address but that's about all it can do and this is not the most powerful use of a mapping GPS (the mapping function is). But TomTom maps are useless as actual maps. I tried to make the TomTom useful for the first 6 weeks of ownership and have not used it since. It can't hold a candle to my 11 year old Garmin Chart/Map plotter. TomTom is a bad joke.

Definately not. I actually drove home a different way last night and was on a "new" freeway that's maybe 3-4 years old.... The TomTom showed the old freeway and wasn't updated at all. My Garmin had the updated freeway years ago.
Oh btw, this is in Southern California and it's a large well known freeway.

Maybe it's more geared towards the east coast lol it picks up new roads or detours fairly quickly in NY, NJ and PA from what I noticed. I had a Garmin Nuvi years ago thought the layout was one of the most boring ever, and took forever to latch onto a GPS signal never went back to them after that. Absolutely no problems with the TomTom although would be nice to use Google maps instead as that'd be my first choice.
