Hi all,
I'm thinking of doing a car-computer in my 2011 3. I have a box (5x) of the above touchscreen displays and am not sure of the best way to mount it. Are there any "blanking" panels that I can hack up and put in place of the stock radio?
Future goals are planning to interface with the HUD's character display (the screen with clock/hvac/temp/etc) since I will be replacing the radio. Also the steering wheel controls, and all can nets, via an ATmega, and can transceiver. I even have an old mac mini ready to go (g4
), I still need to figure out a power supply for the mac and audio amplifier. The idea is to have front row on the touchscreen and vehicle info (mpg or whatever) on the character display. May throw in a USB FM receiver.
I guess a lot of people are going with ipads nowadays for this sort of setup especially with lemur/bluedriver/torque/whatever available but I'm sort of old fashioned
If I get really adventurous I may replace the character display with another LCD panel. I want to find all the required interior bits first because I don't believe in cutting anything up. That way, when I'm sick of it after a year or three I can re-install the original radio.
On another note, has anybody figured out the interface to the character display? I'm guessing good old hitachi 44780 protocol would be too simple so they've come up with a custom interface. If the screen is on can it would be even easier and I have access to canking, vehiclespy, etc... but I think it just plugs into the radio.
