XelderX's BG FSP Build

what's that logo on the C-pillar?

Haha, I ax'd the same question. No Civics.

In all, I can attest from witnessing how much Justin's car rocks. It looks great on course. This car has a national trophy in it's future.

I agree, the car's a beast.

Though in FSP shouldn't it say no BMWs? :p

Well...I might be the first N/A Protege to shred a transmission. I lost something in the driveline on my 3rd run today at a local event. The car launched off the start without any sign of an issue. There was a pivot cone about 50 yards into the course and I downshifted back to first as I was rounding it. When I went back to the gas on exit something just snapped like it jumped out of gear. The motor is fine. There is no drive in 1st or 2nd. I didn't try any of the other gears. The diff seems to be intact. It's something internal in the gearbox...possibly could be the clutch too, but nothing feels out of sorts with the pedal or gear engagement. I'll tear into it later this week and post some pictures.

Bummer about the tranny, but looking forward to the teardown and pics. I've really enjoyed this thread, though I haven't said so much!

The weakest parts of the G15M-R are 2nd/3rd gear, 3rd gear shift fork, reverse lockout("guide plate"), and the bearings themselves... in that order.

My guess is you stripped the 1st/2nd gears (if there's absolutely no drive).

What kind of noise could you hear when you tried to drive in 1st/2nd?

I can't hear anything in the car due to the exhaust. We had the car on jack stands in the pits and a mechanic friend crawled under the front. We put the car in first and rode the brake to simulate a load on the drivetrain. He said it made a pretty nice grinding/clicking noise form the middle of the tranny. There is zero drive in 1st or 2nd. I would have guessed that it popped out of gear when it happened, but I had my hand on the shifter getting ready to shift to 2nd. This is the original transmission from my Protege5 so it has 8 years of abuse on it.

We blew up the diff (spiders) and a CV at Milwaukee NT last year...seems to be a week link.

Good 'ole MSP diff. I guess the N/A guys should get these welded as well.

275's + hard launch = crunch. I'm waiting for the diff in the Miata to let go one of these days. Yikes.

not surprised that something broke.... anything in the G-series trans + slick tires is asking for trouble.....

are you allowed to retrofit a gearbox from another make of car or will that break the rules? Just about anything from toyota is gunna be stronger - you'd need to fashion an adapter plate, flywheel spacer and a few other bits and pieces but you seem to have the equipment and know-how to do that kinda stuff.

The trans has to be from a Protege. i should be OK with a diff with a little better build quality. This one would have probably survived indefinitely if I would have welded it. Everything else in the trans looks brand new.

bare in mind (though i'm sure you already know this) - the transmission/driveline is only as strong as its weakest part.

make the diff unbreakable, you move the problem elsewhere - eventually the weak case is going to bite you in the bum and thats a problem that cannot really be solved....

i'd be after a rule concession on a transmission exchange, if that's an option.....

Even though I run very wide tires they are not designed for starting line grip and my high negative camber setting doesn't help. My car can spin them quite easily launching so there is very little driveline shock compared to what most cars see. I'm not too terribly worried about the rest of the trans, but we'll just have to wait and see.

You know youd think the G-type trans was made if thin crystal from the talk of it. Its a production gearbox built for a commuter vehicle, its sturdy, simple and functional, but its no surprise its not suited for a gazillion hp or whatever. At 120hp/110ft/lbs(?), Justin should be fine....even with the 275s.

Theres a lot that was "rushed" to production on the MSP, (pretty uncharacteristic of Mazda actually) the diff and the revision thereof is one of them. Its just not a very favorable design and never was.

So....How long until you get the Mfactory unit? ;)
