i love that car.. one of the best cars iv ever driven!! not much power, but SO easy to drive at the limit, i want another one.. please keep us posted on the build, ps i think i still have the old sparco hub for that car, if you need it.. its yours. :)

As far as the wiring goes, you can build harness extensions that plug directly into the BG's harness (be it 2" or 20"), if necessary. The end connector on said extension harness can mate to the appropriate FS sensors, controls, and even the ECU. This will allow you to maintain a 100% intact OE harness.

Furthermore, chances are that there will be a few wires abandoned in the harness that can be re-used for non BP items such as the FS's DIS. You'll also need to use the BG's alternator as the BJ's does not have a built in regulator. Megasquirt would be a good (and inexpensive) choice for engine managment in that it's extremely simple to make it work with the BG's OE harness.

I can be of some assistance on the harness issues if need be.

So you are thinking it would be better for me to use the BG harness instead of the BJ? That might get a little tricky when it comes to the ignition coils since the BP used a distributor. I guess you are saying that I could run wires all the way from the BJ ECU alongside the stock BG harness and connect to the BJ coils if the BG harness doesn't allow for it?

You can use most, if not the entire BG hareness to make the FS work. If necessary, additional wiring can be added outside of the harness as the SP rules allow for that. I'm suggesting adding pigtails, per se, to adapt BP connectors to FS controls and sensors (I.E. ECU, TPS, IAC, IAT, CLT, EGO, Injectors, etc). Some of these sensors might already share the same connector or can be exchanged between the engines. The wiring that was used to integrate the BP dizzy can be adapted to plug into the FS coil pack array while adding only a pair of wires for the VR pickup on the FS's crank pully. This will save on a ton of additonal wiring whereas the majority of the sensors sensors/controls between the two engines operate identically for all practical purposes.

If so desired, the entire BG harness can be abandoned, though left in place, and a new harness can be assembled beside it.

Rock on. That makes things way easier. I really won't have much of an update on that until I can get the FS mounted and see what lines up where.

can't you disconnect the power steering pump in SP? was PS standard in the first-gen car?

I'm thinking that with 275's I'm going to need the power steering. I've tried driving my Protege5 with no power steering and it doesn't work well with my driving style.

Subbin ....

Won't doing the engine swap throw you into SM, since that engine was not available in any trim for that model year of car? I'm not very familiar with the rules in SP, I just assumed any engine swap, and FI on NA puts you into SM.

Model year doesn't matter in SP as long as the donor and receiver are on the same line in the SP appendix (all the N/A Proteges are listed on the same line). Hence the update/backdate rule.

Nevermind .... I answered my own question by looking it up in the 2007 rule book. Since all years of Proteges, except the MSP, are in FSP, you can swap parts between them all. Very cool idea swapping the FS motor in since it's already prepped. Can't wait to see the project start rolling.

Looked again for some reason I was looking in stock not SP.

O was reading through the rules a few days ago thinking they had changed a bunch of stuff when I wasn't paying attention. I was in the Street Touring section...duh(confused)

hey, you stay out of my rule section! :p

I picked up the motor mounts today. I'll be "window welding" them tomorrow and letting them cure while I get the 1.8L removed from the car. I'll try and get some updated pictures once I have things moving in the right direction.

Wino-Weld FTW!

Are they stock or after market?

Finally, some progress. I started today by getting the front of the car dismantled and throwing away most of the A/C system. I discovered that the person I bought the car from cut holes in the radiator support for the intercooler pipes to route through. I'll need to get some metal in there and weld those up to stay legal. I'll probably just cut out the whole section and rob a good one from a salvage car. That will make it a lot easier to weld in. I swapped out the throttle cables from the 3rd gen to the '94 model and I'm happy to say it matches up perfectly. The peal end of the cable is exactly the same, but the I needed the much shorter 3rd gen cable to work with the FS motor. I also window welded the 3 salvage mounts I got. I still need to do the rear mount, but I have to get the motor out before I can get to it. Hopefully I can get the motor out tomorrow. I slept in and got a late start today.

Yay, progress!

Side note: If you don't end up using the BG axles, I'm interested in purchasing them if they're in good shape.
