WTB: Radiator drain plug for '02 Protege 5

Noticed a coolant drip from bottom of radiator at plastic drain plug. Attempted to tighten (phillips head) and could tell the plug was cracked, so I left it alone and did not remove it. The local Mazda dealership overnight shipped a new one for me which I received Friday. The new one didn't have the same head as the new one was the type of plug to install and tighten with fingers, like a petcock. The dealership double checked the part number and said this is the plug I need. Well, after draining my radiator and seeing my old plug, the new plug is not the same and will not work. I've bounced the part number off of several online Mazda part websites and it says its a drain plug for an '02 Mazda Protege 5 but I definitely have the wrong plug. Part # G607-15-316. Unless someone just put the wrong part in the part bag at the factory, I'm anticipating a lot of headaches trying to get this figured out with the dealership.

Do any of you P5 experts know if any of the P5's came with different model radiators or something quirky like that? I know the part lists offer a different radiator plug for the automatic transmission cars (I have a 5-sp manual) so could it be possible my manual tranny car got the radiator for an automatic tranny during assembly?

Finally, does anyone have a wrecked radiator and would be willing to sell the little black, phillips head drain plug?

Any thoughts or expertise is appreciated.

Steve

I can't tell you why the plug doesn't work. But I can say my drain plug is like you described. It is designed to be loosened and tightens by hand sorta like a wing-nut. Might be a stupid question but does the plug have the o-ring on it?

You have the correct part number

Well, on the AutoZone website, I've found they have good pictures of the drain plug for the radiator in the auto and manual tranny P5's. Even though I have a manual 5-sp, I need the plug for the radiator of the auto tranny car. Whoa, I think I just figured it out.....I forgot my wife wrecked the front end of the car 7 or 8 yrs ago and I'll bet the shop that fixed the car replaced the radiator with the one that was originally meant for an auto tranny car. I started thinking my car was built on a Friday and it was 4 pm when my car came down the assembly line and the installer just grabbed the nearest radiator before he rolled out the door for his weekend. Off to the dealership to try again...

Thanks for the reply.

If all else fails I have a 01 MP3 full size radiator with about 56k miles on it. Ill let it go for like $20 plus shipping. Also if you have any issues finding the correct part I work in parts at mazda so shoot me a message.
