Wrinkle Paint on Valve Cover Q

I did a search last night and came up with one pic of somebody's cover with black Wrinkle Paint. I was wondering how many people have done this, and if the end result was what you expected. I am going for a... dare I say it... Integra-ish red finish on my valve cover.

I found this:

and I think the red is probably what I am looking for, but I was wondering if anybody has had any good experiences with this type of finish. Any pointers? Also, should I clearcoat afterwards? Or will that make it look funky? Any help is appreciated...

You know the MSM has a red wrinkle finish too, so don't be ashamed & think you are a Honda boy.

That is exactly what I want... I like the cap too...

I used to be a Honda Boy, (I still like gen2 integras a lot). But I heart my P5.

that looks cool... a little different that the flat or gloss look. i cant see a clear coat looking good on this though.... just my opinion.

I would ideally like to have the MSM oil cap, DIY wrinkle finish, Titanium rearview mirror, & billet dead pedal. They get all the nice stuff that Mazda left out of the MSP.

I think I am going to try it. My gf... er fiancee, is going out of town for two weeks which would allow ample time to use the oven to cure, get the smell out of the house, and drive her car around if i need to...

So is the VHT stuff the stuff to buy. It looks like it is as Aussie thing. Wonder how hard it is to get here or if there are any comparable brands that I can find in SD...

i know what i'm gonna do when my valve cover is up for another paint job now! whoa mama that looks good.

Hey guys. I used VHT Wrinkle Paint. Comes in red, black and I believe grey.

Here is mine. I plan to remove it and treat it with another coat. As you can see not all areas are consistent

azeli73, Where did you get it from? I have't really started looking yet, but their website only listed retailers in Australia and New Zealand. Maybe an auto paint specialty store would have it?

BTW, yours is the pic I found when I looked it up last night. It confirmed that this is the type of finish that I want. I am going to go red wrinkle on the VC and flat black high temp smooth paint on the heat shield. Did you clear coat it? Is is hard to keep clean?

I thought I might be the first on here to try this since not much pops up from a search. But I am never first at anything... =(

Here's mine. I used Duplicolor, followed the instructions exactly. The first time it didn't wrinkle so I stripped it and tried again. Turns out the trick is to dry it with a heat gun, that'll give it the most even wrinkling.

Beautiful. That is EXACTLY what I wanted. Where did you get the paint? Just an auto parts store? Or home improvement? Or did you have to go to a automotive paint store? Also, how long did you have to hit it with the heat gun. I have one, but my stupid garage doesn't have power, So I would have to spray it outside, and then bring it inside to heat it. Kinda sucks, but I guess it is the price that you pay. Thanks for the pic.

Question: when removing the cover, what precautions should I take? I've never done this before so any tip would be appreciated.

Should I cover it?
Does the paint have to be baked?
How long before I can re-install and drive?

Thanks!

I got Duplicolor from the local Advanced. I hit it with the heat gun for a while, I think the wrinkling started after about 1/2 hour, and I stayed on it until everything was wrinkled. You have to coat it pretty thick, but be careful around the back side of the plug holes, the paint tends to pool up there. And like I said, read the instructions and follow them EXACTLY, the wrinkling happens because the top skins over and the paint underneath is still wet. It's almost like shrink wrapping. Try some on a scrap, you'll see what I mean.

Hey wrench, how come your plug wires look like the fit perfectly instead of being too long like most of us (see azeli's pic)?
