Windows Just Tinted...Noticed Something New

I just had my windows tinted. No big deal. It looks nice and had the effect I wanted.

However I did a walk around before I left it at the shop, did a walk around before I picked it up. All ok.

As I drive away I notice some crumpled plastic on my driver's side mirror housing. Almost looks like it melted.

I did not notice this before or after...until I drove away. It was GLARING once I began to drive away.

Any ideas what happened? Pictures are provided, low res, but they show in detail the damage.

Is this from the factory or from the tint shop?

Thanks,

Aster

It appears that the tint shop used a heat gun while applying the tint and held it a bit too close for too long at that spot.

Hope this helps.

That's what I thought. I will call the place up right now and let them know that I've found.

I assumed they use heat guns when applying the tint. Is it common practice to use a heat gun when tinting?

The place has been around for awhile. There was an H2 out front along with a few Suburbans when I drove up, so I felt better.

Thanks,

Aster

What you have there is a heat gun burn. It is not uncommon for tint shops to use a heat gun on windows with a compound curve. After they cut the film to the correct pattern it is placed on the outside of the glass and heatshrunk with a heat gun. The film is then trimmed and installed on the inside of the window. What surprises me is that they needed a heat gun on the side windows. When I tinted my protege, the side windows were flat enough that a heat gun was unnecessary. It was only necessary for the back window. Hopefully you can get the shop to replace the mirror housing for you. Good luck!

Just to clarify is it like a plastic film that is burned onto the mirror housing? Will it come off or does it need to be replaced?

If you look at his picture you can see that his mirror housing is burned...Tint liner would have peeled right off

doo!
u gotta complain.......the paint is weakend now, it will start pealing off in a few months..........at first just there..........later, as the water gets there, arround the whole mirror housing. A buddy of mine had the same problem.

hell nahh!

**** money back!

at most he payed 150 for the tint..........new housing will be arround 250-300

Thanks for all the replies guys. I tried to call the shop, but apparently they go home at 5 on the dot. I had to go into work tonight due to that stupid worm that is infecting so many computers and drove by the shop, and they were all gone for the day.

I will get ahold of them tomorrow and begin what I hope is not an ordeal to get my housing replaced.

I will update you tomorrow.

Thanks,

Aster

To officially answer this- no it is not film. The plastic is actually crinkled up. Almost looks like a stress of the plastic, but plastic would break under that stress, not crinkle.

Wish me luck tomorrow,

Aster

Update: I took it by the shop yesterday. One of the guys checked out the damage and at first said he had seen something like that before. He went inside and called a body shop down the road, then told me to go over there.

The body shop guy laughed and said that it was from a heat gun. He is going to take off the house, sand and finish the section, and repaint it.

SO we will see what it looks like. So far no hassle, but quality of work better be factory.

I've got to go by today in an hour to drop the car off.

If they screw you over we can all get together and have one big Mazda meet at your house, we'll get drunk, then go kick thier asses!

is that not a piece that can simply be replaced? if so i wouldn't want them to refinish it, but replace it...it may look alright when they finish but what will it look like down the road...

man.. sorry about your problems man.. i don't understand why they used a heating gun at all, let alone on the drivers windows.. i had my tint done (20% all the way YEAH!! ) and no gun involved at any window... the guy i had do it (in knoxville TN outstanding guy) has been doin tint for like 24 or 25 yrs.. in fact, i've had multiple compliments on my tint up here in IL and ppl say they've never seen such a good tint job.. hope it all works out for you..

if anyone wants to get tint in knoxville, let me tell you it's worth the drive.. you save money and have an excellent tint job that is warrantied for life, and you can go to any tint dealer that sells that brand and get the warranty tint work done for free..

I want to get my car tinted nice and dark, but in Colorado you can not go as dark as I want so it is almost impossible to get a nice dark tint job done unless you have a hook up which I dont have. It blows, but what blows even worse is the fact that the tint place melted your mirror. I hope that the body shop can do wonders with the plastic and make it look good.

Matt
