Will spacers solve my tire chain problem on my 2010 MS3?

Hello All,
I am a new owner of the MS3 and absolutely loving it. My only trouble is that I love to go skiing and I can't get chains to fit my stock rims 225/40/18. I bought 6mm clearance cables and they still rub up against my struts. I found some Thule K summit chains that don't wrap around the back of the tire and just mount on the lug nuts but I am not crazy about spending that kind of money on chains and needing that specialized of chains in case they break up in the mountains of California where chains are often required. I don't go up to the snow often enough to justify snow tires and it doesn't sound like all seasons will be enough to get me up the mountain safely.
Then I started looking at this site and I saw people talking about spacers, I really don't want to lower my car but It would be nice to have the wheels out a bit more and flush with the body, then I realized that this might solve my tire chain problem.
Any thoughts or ideas?

That sounds like it would solve your strut clearance problem. Just make sure you check outside clearance with chains and spacers installed.

Is your car a 2010+? The 2007-2009 (first generation) have 215 section tires as stock. If you have the first gen with 225, someone plus sized your car.
