Hi All,
It is time for my first oil change. Can someone tell me if I change the oil myself will it void my warranty? I plan on keeping all reciepts and recording the mileage and date in my little Mazda Book.
thanx for all the great info.

No it most certainly will not.

Unless you do something like forget to put the plug back in and you seize your engine

WOW! Don't think i could have gotten a quicker response. Thanx for the info. Also should i change the little gasket that is on the oil pan plug?

Absolutely - if you go buy your oil filter at the dealer, they will give you the drain plug washer with the filter.

I think I'm on my 4th or 5th change with the same washer and have no problems.

Really!? Mine throws 'em in no charge.

In a pinch, I've reused them on other cars with no problem. I'd rather change it for peace of mind's sake, though.

use mobil1 and you might have to take your car to an oil change place to get the filter off. its a b**** to take off the first time. they torque them really tight from the factory

or the good ol screwdriver through the filter does the trick for that first change :p

let the dealer do the first one to get rid off the gorilla-tightened oil filter from factory.

subsequent filter changes can be easily done by bare hands (with gloves if you don't want to get hand dirty.)

and if you are planning to do your own oil change from now on, may I suggest buying a Fumoto drain valve to greatly simplify the oil change process?

of course it will,
and gassing up the car in the full service isle requires a signed document everytime,
that way Mazda knows the gas was put in by a trained professional!

That, my friend, if the biggest fuck1n understatement of the century! DAMN YOU MAZDA!

Hmm, maybe I should do some *exercises* to increase my wrist strength...
...you know, to help me turn the oil filter...

...same here. i don't think i have ever changed the washer on all the cars I have had/changed the oil.

Isnt the drain plug gasket permanently stuck on the plug from factory? So that would make a double gasket right? Honda plugs/gaskets fit on our cars too so if you have a friend that can get stuff for free at honda that works too.

These things are awesome for tidying up your oil changes, but you have to be careful for two reasons...

1 - Since the plug threads won't be worked every 5k miles, once you do remove it, it can really be a pain in the butt to get it off, and those things don't like being torqued by a wrench.

2 - The do hang down from the bottom of the pan (especially the one with the nipple, which is 1.5" in length). If you hit something on the road, they can easily get bent, bend your oil pan, or break off. This actually happened to someone I know.
