Wierd noise from engine bay

:
Cosmic Blue MS3
07 speed 3 w/ 22k miles. cold air, top mount, tbe, 1step colder plugs. Driving home I missed a shift going to 3rd, didn't grind or anything just didn't want to go in, happened once before. I get to the house and set my e-brake to let the car idle for a moment and heard a very strange grinding/ rattling noise. Not sure how to describe it. Couldn't pinpoint exactly where it was coming from either.

That is very interesting. I have experienced the same exact thing, I swore that I was hearing things. However I did not grind at all!

Doubt you did any harm and was probably just hearing the rattling of the throw out bearing or gear assembly in the tranny. After something like that happens, you'll naturally be more paranoid and hear all sorts of 'new' things that probably was there before and you never noticed.

BTW it sounds like you just went into neutral, not really a misshift in the traditional sense. If you went into 1st, then that could've been a bad thing but how bad would depend on the speed you were going at the time and how fast you reacted.

Just a general test for anyone interested: drive your car really hard ripping through the gears. Warm things up real good. Make several passes if possible. Then park in a nice quiet place (preferrably at night when there's less traffic, noise around) roll up the windows, clutch out and just listen. You'll hear all kinds of rattling crazy sounds coming from the tranny. Push the clutch in the everything disappears. All pretty normal and nothing to worry about unless the sounds get unusually loud.

+1

BTW I believe the manual says not to shift into first at speeds above 20mph as this could cause serious damage to the transmission.

You know i noticed something like this tonight too. With the clutch in if im shifting really fast (this works at stand still to just moving from gear to gear), i get a thunk going into third. Sometimes with the clutch fully depressed i get a grind into third, but it only happens going from second to third, never downshifting. Got to thinking about it and alot of people talk about missing third, and it happens to me too. Somethings up with that gear on our cars. Fourth to fifth is butter. Seems like when your really getting on it you have to push it fairly hard to get it to seat.

I was under the impression the soft factory motor mounts are letting the engine rock pretty good when the motor hits it's power peak. That rocking back and forth makes it hard for the linkage to work smoothly. At least the theory makes sense.

Ive got the 88 duro motor mount.

As do I. Getting a delrin mount as soon as the funds allow. This was definatly not a noise that has been there and gone unnoticed. It didn't sound like it but it would have been like saying you were watching tv and didn't hear the vaccum come on. It hasn't done it again today so not so worried about it. I live on a dirt road they re-spread rock on once every so often so it can be rougher and it could have even been a rock that got bounced up somewhere and it was making contact with something causing a vibrating kinda noise. It's alot easier to think about things like that after the "oh, my lord I broke my car" thought proccess passes.

So I guess the next question is how badly did you miss it and how fast was she turning when you missed it?

Ed

And to answer this question I couldn't honestly say, but however fast your going when you hit 6k and shift to third. I don't belive it went anywhere near the 7 grand mark but we have a limiter there I'm sure but I've never hit it.

Edit: Definatly has something to do with the clutch or some of it's components in some way. I was letting my car cool down and pushed the clutch pedal almost to the point at which it usually catches and it started doing it again, clutch all the way in and it quit. Letting it go I stopped about the same spot and it did it again and then I let go of the clutch and i quit again. No clue at this point.

Man, I did a horrible misshift once. Was going around 10-15 mph down a small hill in traffic, thought I was in neutral (but I was in first), dropped the clutch straight out and my car slammed into first. I really thought I broke something, but everything's normal :P. Probably put like 300 mi worth of stress on my clutch though.

I made a mistake once that probably but about 60,000miles on my clutch..So don't feel bad.. lol!

I tried to go up a steep hill in my friend's neighborhood on 4th gear at like 20 miles an hour (misshift). Car vibrated violently as if it was trying to say "WTF" in a mechanical way :)

beat that.

My friend downshifted into first instead of 3rd and put a piston through his block......
