will this really work?
is this reliable??
if so, why aren't people going this route??

custome made intercooler piping and

for a total of no more than 1000??

would you be able to run this with a MSP ECU?, so add another 250

maybe i'm crazy....everyone knows i'm cheap....but wouldn't this work good for 10 on a stock protege motor??
wouldn't this be reliable?

still need an exhaust
still need intercooler piping

and after you spend all that money and make that ghetto ass kit, one of several things will happen:

1) The turbo mani will crack from on of the poor/cheap welds
2) The turbo will explode because it is made of recycled soda cans
3) Your engine will explode due to overboost, because the cheap wastegate uses a pen spring to "hold" boost
4) Or your car wont make boost because the intercooler has cheap welds and looses .5 psi at 1psi of boost

or you could click the link in my sig (end shameless plug) and worry a little less about the custom stuff. i sell those turbo manifolds and have some on hand

the OBX mani is pretty good acutaly.. that's the only worthwhile part I see there.

ok, how about that set up, with a junkyard audio or volvo turbo??
wouldn't it be better?
eitherway, you get what you pay for...plain and simple.

Could I click it for 1.8 coils, bracket & some blue ngk wires?

:) still working on a price for you on those items - can i ask why you want to go to that setup?

the 1.8L packs are supposed to give smoother ignition and a very small HP increase because of the reduced heatsoak from the re-positining the packs off the valve cover.

that's true.. but the whole point in doing the conversion is that the performance of the packs in the 2.0L suffer enough from the heatsoak off the valve cover that moving them away from the engine into a cooler area helps more in a smoother ignition and increases the longevity of the packs vs having them right over the plugs.

smoother ignition, wtf? the shorter the sparkplug wire, the better. the coilpacks are designed to sit on the valve cover and withstand heat. unless you're putting a turbo right next to the valvecover, I dont' see why longevity is an issue?

You do know direct fire coils are the most efficient method for spark right?

The 1.8L coil pack (It's a single pack, with twin coils attached to one and the other) presumibly allow for more even spark distribution.

The twin coil with leads system seems to, at least in my experience, 'bake' the spark plugs directly under the coils on cylinder 2 and 4. Here's a picture of the ceramic at the base of the plug browned, and a nice, fouled ignition front. This is only after a couple of hundred miles:

The Protege's I've worked on with the FS-DE, have all shown signs of this happening, consistantly.

The WSC Protege's use them, as well. I'll be trying them shortly, so I don't have to change my plugs every month. But we'll see how it turns out.

they're supposed to smooth out your powerband and give you a little (and i do mean little) more hp and torque.

i'll say this. these were on my p5 until i traded it in. the guys in the shop asked me what i did to the car after i took them off because the throttle response wasn't there and it wasn't as "peppy" as it was before.

...but i didn't notice anything...then again, i didn't notice anything when i put my UR pulley on either.

I just don't see any proof that this does any good. Give me some kind of data and I'll be happy. Seems like a quick and easy upgrade if it does make an improvement though.

in the first thread I posted they were talking about hard data and proof of improvements in a very old thread, I tried searching for it for you but I couldn't come up with anything.

Yea, I see there's a reference to a past thread. Flat_Black and Installshield are the NA kings IMO, and they differ on the subject. Tomorrow I'll serach for the thread they are talking about. I always foul #3 plug first, not 2 or 4 though. The search continues tomorrow...
