the pipe diameter is specifically chosen for the length of piping (well it should be)...the reason being that the further the ait filter is away from the engine, the further the air has to travel. now, if the pipe is too big, it will be great at high rpm, but will suck through the rest of the rev range because the air is travelling too slow. smaller tubes make the air travel faster which in some cases give more rpm (it's the same theory as intake manifolds). so what injen did was figure out the most appropriate diameter for that given length of piping to be the most appropriate across the rev range....
