Why get AWD?

I've never been a fan of burnouts. Just seems so wasteful. I'd rather hook.

Some cars need to burnout to hook. Hook and dead hook are also two separate things. Dead hook in a low hp car like the CX-5 kills everything with bog down. Dead hook on a high hp car can also cause a huge wheel stand, also slowing it down. Then we have auto and manual trans, and so many variables in between. Boy, glad I'm not working on a drag car today,my least favorite anyways...

Low hp cars need gearing and higher stall to overcome it. The cx5 manages to at least have one of these, which is why it's not too bad off the line for what it is, imo

Dead hook a manual 4 cylinder off the line with little to no clutch slip though and it's just terrible, lol!

Enjoyed this thread - but back to the original topic, is AWD important? If the road under your car isn't dry pavement, probably yes. Snow, ice, gravel, etc - definitely yes. We got AWD for the capability to go places away from where we live that might have snow or difficult roads. We haven't been there yet, and so far it's really hard to tell when the AWD is active. I floored it on a gravel road recently and no wheel spin like I would expect with FWD. But it was seamless. I think it's hard to tell when it is working unless it's challenging conditions.

I think people who opt for AWD ... do so for 1 of 2 reasons

For safety ... AWD is better in all road conditions
For Performance... AWD provide better traction and grip

I read the 2017 CX-5 can operate the majority of the time in FWD mode
with about 2% of torque pre-loaded to the rear ...

16 is the same way. Pretty sure all their Iactive AWD systems operate the same way.

Here is the house I am buying, and an example of WHY AWD was a deal-maker for me. I bought the CX5 in 2015, with just something like this in mind. In rain or winter, it's going to REALLY come through for me here. this is the best I can do showing the terrain of my new drive-way, 3D Google-maps.

If you know anything about Google Maps 3D, you know to get that much of a wrinkle in the topo from it, it's STEEP AF! in real-life.

Make sure you build right at the top so every single day you get to drive up through the mud and use AWD [emoji3]

Congrats Uno!

Reminds me of my old driveway when I lived in the mountains. AWD definitely handy.

Is that a chupacabra? ;)

Looks like a wee deer. I've seen a ton on the property I am buying above, just driving out there for the showing.

Here is my likely new back yard. Just waiting on the bank to muddle through the process of the loan, etc. etc. etc. and get inspection done and fix any issues it reveals etc.

Thanks! And yes, the drive-way is steep enough that I honestly feel 4WD or AWD is mandatory for this property, if one wishes to actually live there and not just vacation. Had I bought the FWD only, I likely would have to trade it in on 4WD AWD or get a 2nd vehicle or something.

Anyway, I'm all excited about the very high likelyhood of this becoming my home...right up until stuff breaks and I have to pay for it instead of calling a land-lord, lol

Cool! Yea, there's a creek further back behind the pond. Between that and the wetlands that's turned into a duck compound, no one is building behind me...Am considering selling and relocating out towards your way/Midwest somewhere,though...
