Why doesnt everyone just use glass packs?

as I drive around I always see these big honkin 300 dollar dynamaz and magnaflow mufflers on the back of cars, but I dont understand why.

When I had my neon, I jsut bought a 28 dollar thrush glasspack and had it installed. it opened up the car a little bit, and sounded amazing, very low and throaty, perfect volume, and not raspy at all.

Is there something im missing here? WHats the diff between mine and their exhausts? (other than the 300 bucks...)

ok fine, either way theyre 30 bucks.

Is there anything else at all? do you get better performance out of a dynomax/magnaflow?

typically you see numerically higher horsepower gains from a full catback exhaust rather than just a muffler

Packing inside wears down/out and they get loud as hell. Also many glass packs are louvered inside. Stay away from those, they suck for flow.

Glass pack tips are

alright well... I guess all I need to know is: Is there anything I should worry about if I install two glasspacks on my rx7?

first gen neons came stock with a nice 2.25inch exhaust, proteges have some spots that narrow down to almost 1.5inches
I wouldnt worry about putting two glasspacks on an RX-7, gut the cats, I'm not sure how big the stock pipe is though.

do you still have your neon?

yes.

The Neon was my parents, I was jsut 'borrowing' it until I ot my own wheels, and I decided it needed to sound cooler.

i THINK the stock pipes are 2.5" on the rx7, thats what ive read in a couple places, but im not 100%. I hope someone knows...

I jsut cant decide whether to jsut go with 2 glasspacks and the stock tips, or go spend like 600 bucks on a whole new system.

I wonder how much louder 2 cats on an Rx7 will be compared to 1 on a neon....

Correct on the neon points. Especially the DOHC neons, the stocker was 2.25" mandrel bent. A good exhaust added like 2 whp.

Rotaries might have too hot of an exhaust for a glass pack to last any worthwhile amount of time.

Having the removable silencers is a nice feature. Megan racing stuff seems to be decent quality from what I have seen. Just remember that RX-7's can be extremely loud when not muffled right. If it were me I would save for a few more monthes and get something from Racing Beat. They offer proven HP gains and you get a lot more than just 2 mufflers. I'm assuming that you are talking about a 2nd Gen RX-7. Those were the only ones with dual mufflers IIRC. Of course, I'm one to talk..I run a glasspack in my Protege w/ a side exit exhaust, but I was more concerned with weight than sound.

I will second the Racing Beat. They make nice rotary exhausts. Look for someone who specializes, you like and save up and do it right the first time.

yeah that sounds like a good idea for sure. Ive heard nothing but good things about RB.

I wonder if I should go for the whole cat back system? or even replace the headers and stuff too.

speaking of... Im fairly new to exhausts... so I was jsut wondering.

WHen I look at my echuast, right in the center I see a big pod, like a muffler right in the middle. Is that the cat? if so then what are the two bulges between that big pod and the headers?
