ok better analogy. dont put load on the motor in 5th. If your hitting 10psi etc at 1/3 throttle it wont damage it, just dont put alot of load on it ok. ez as 123 dont boost it hard, and if you are going to boost it make sure you have enough rpm and momentum to not hurt it. you can still pass in 5th, just dont go hard on it ya know. treat it for what it is...overdrive

any more gas than slowly speeding up a few mph should warrant a shift to stay out of boost. hitting 1-2 isn't something horrible, but pedal to the medal is bad joojoo.

yeah, that's what I do as well. of course, if i need to pass somebody quickly, i find all i need is about 4-5psi at partial throttle. i don't need to floor it to get to 10psi.

So the 5th gear thing is still going to actually be doing something that's causing the problems. Is it just a rod bending/piston breaking from too much pressure or running lean....? Something.... Never the less, it's sad the motors are that weak. Dang we got screwed.

if I need to accelerate quickly and I'm below 4,000 RPM, I'll downshift...

our cars run very lean (~15 AFR) at WOT up until right around 3700 RPM where the AFRs drop suddenly to much more conservative levels (~12)

I believe MSPs do a very similar thing, which is why you wouldn't want to boost hard at say, 3000 RPM in 5th

Not sure if you have a MSP or another car, but if you didn't know, the MSP is actually overly rich straight from the factory. So rich that it causes bogging, hesitation, poor fuel economy, etc etc. Most people who get an AFC (the Apexi SAFC doesn't work on our cars) get it leaned out to the right conditions. The rest get some sort of EMS (microtech, haltech, unichip, emanage, etc).

But I do agree with you, if you are upping boost and doing considerable amounts of autoxing, tracking, then a high flow fuel pump and some 440cc injectors will help.

1. This is probably one of the most most abstract posts I have read.

2. It makes me want to cry every time I read one of these threads about "how not to blow your engine." I think that 90% of the people that blow their engines aren't being totally honest about their driving habits. It's very hard for me to believe that a stock FS-DET will throw a rod when not abused. Maybe the current owner didn't drive it like a jackass, but who knows what happened before you got it. Mine had 53 miles on the odometer when I bought it. For all I know the techs at the dealership could have been bouncing it off the rev limiter for 50 of those miles. Sure, then engine can't handle abuse as well as others, but believe me that there IS some headroom. If you're scared the engine will blow, don't drive it.

I get near 30mpg now at around 250hp with the Unichip. I was closer to the 23 or so MPG before tuning.

A lot of the power we got from the Unichip was due to the removing of fuel.

No, if you're scared to blow it leave it stock or know what you are doing. That is why I created this post. To create a running list of "bad scenarios" which are leading to extensive motor damage. May have been done before, but I had no idea what to even search for. Sure didn't want to read everyone's "blown motor" threads.


You are correct in saying that most people are not honest w/ what they did. Its probably hard for many people to confess they did something wrong.

the power from the stock ecu sucks btw.... even if you add like 6 lbs of boost..... You will save yourself gas/money in the long run if u invest in a microtech/haltech! and have a 10 times more fun car and not risk the fact that running 12 lbs will not blow your engine..... i know several peeps who have boosted 12 lbs on stock internals for over 2 years and drive they're car like s*** but dont boost in 5th and take care of they're car....... Im not saying dont drive your car in 5th gear but just dont gun it.... its not worth it.

Well, the problem is that I read way too many posts that go something like this:

"My car was completely stock and I was driving my grandma to the grocery store to buy ointment for her bunyons. All of a sudden I heard a loud boom and oil sprayed everywhere. I have no idea what happened. The FS-DE is a POS and every MSP is a ticking time bomb. Does anyone have an MBC for sale?"

suddenly, after hundreds of dollars invested into diamond plates and NGK related crap your car doesn't need an oil change and you certainly dont need that funny looking rubber hose that attaches to your wastegate actuator, thats just ricey.

i'll have to be honest with mine when it blew. i had quite a few supporting mods:FMIC,j-pipe back exhaust,AWR manual MMs, wrx 440s, splitsecond afc, innovate wbo2, couple others....but any way i do blame myself. there was prob 3 factors involving with my incident. i was a little overdue for an oil change and i was using 5w-30 in hot sofla weather(shoulda prob used 10w-30), upped the boost a little when i was racing this b18c5 civic hatch, and i was just about to shift to 4th but hit the rev limiter just a little bit and KABOOOOMMMM!!!

Well my car is in the shop right now with manuel(juans brother) and i have sort of big plans. i should have it back by this weekend.

Yeah, that sounds like a situation where everything came together. What PSI were you hitting at redline in 3rd? I don't run my car to 6500 since power is already dropping off at that point. When I want to get on it, I shift at 6k. The long stroke and crappy breathing head make it pointless to take it that high.

On a side note, I haven't even boosted in like 2 weeks. My resonator fell apart on the inside and the inner pipe is probably sitting at an angle and restricting flow quite a bit.

#1, Stock Engine. broken radiator fan, raced the car hard on a track for about 45mins (didn't know about the fan at that time), it overheated pretty bad and was throwing coolant everywhere. Put water back in the rad and drove home. Took the car out later that night, raced a SC mustang (lol), boost spiked at ~14-15psi, bent 2 rods.

#2, Forged Pistons/Rods, the shop who put the engine back in my car ****** something up with the coolant when they started it the 1st time. piston #4 gripped in the cylinder and warped. i knew i had to change pistons again because of that so i drove it hard in october/november before putting it away @12-14psi with stock injectors only (do not do this) and partially melted all 4 pistons. Possible problem with wastegate also (my apexi avcr setting was always off), boost would spike at 16+psi (i've seen 1.3bar peak = ~19psi). that's what probably killed all 4 pistons.
