Who primes before they start?

:
11 MS3 Sport
Something I have always done when i'm going to start my car after it sitting for a while, is leave it in "On" for a few seconds to prime the engine, then turn it over. Just so I can avoid cranking forever and trying to prolong the life of the starter equipment.

However, when I do it on the MS3, it cranks like immediately. So then I started thinking, does this have anything to do with the direct injection? Also, is this a bad idea to do on our engine?

I do it most of the time. Pause for approx. 2 seconds. Its a habit that I picked up when I had the standback installed. Also, have picked it up b/c I have had hesitations on cold startups like the TSB mentions without the standback. I don't think it matters considering it has cranked up for almost instantly with out any pauses. But then I get hesitations.

the engine always turns over right away, i do it in my truck sometimes, but that things an old POS, never thought to do it in the ms3

With the direct injection system the fuel pump that would "prime" the system doesn't operate at a pressure high enough to be injected. The system will not build pressure till the CDFP runs as the engine turns over.

So by what you're saying, priming shouldn't be a big deal because the fuel pump hasn't really started operating until the engine starts to turn over.

The method's pretty much useless?

+1 for someone who primes. I dunno, guess it stuck over the years. Whether it be for fuel pumps, aftermarket ignition systems, or diesel engines.

Like the other guy said.Your fuel pump dont work untill your cams are turning so just turning on the key isnt doing anything.
