There was a long thread awhile back where a lot of people were saying that they had problems with their protege stalling at idle. Well, it happened to me. 2,300 miles in, no mods, engine was warm... I haven't even gotten to my first oil change yet. I haven't noticed any rough idle issues until just yesterday when my car seemed to run a bit more rough when the fan comes on.

I did a search to try and find that thread and came up with a ton of other threads about the same thing.
Try it: Do a search for "idle" in the thread titles. You'll see what I mean.

Anyway, check the box whether or not you've had problems. Even if it only happened to you once. I wish there was a general protege forum to put this in. I'm probably going to miss all the sedan and MSP people.

My car has never stalled, but sometimes it idles low...in the 500 RPM range. Shakes the car a little bit but most annoying it causes the PS to loose boost pressure sometimes suprising me when turning into a driveway or something. I plan to ask about it during my next oil change.

BTW, my car has 23k miles and has been doing it for as long as I can remember. Seems to only happen when I have lots of accessories on...ala AC, lights, wipers etc.

Mine will do it sometimes. Very rarely though. But I have the J-spec intake and Mazdaspeed exhaust cam, so I suppose I just attributed it to them.

I had a 'moment' just the other day. Sitting at a light, the whole car shook, nearly stalled and then regained its normal idle. I should add that my car is bone stock with 12k miles.

It's not enough to make me bring the car in to have it inspected.

Had it happen a few times lately. Nothing drastic. I attributed it to the colder weather we have been having.

38,000 miles not probelm...then all of a sudden, CEL, rough/weak idle and it stalled on me once. took it in to the stealership got new egr and some wires i think, under warr, back on the road 3000 miles +, no issues! runs like a champ!

30K miles and this has never happened to me, even in the -40C/F we experienced last winter, or the very hot and humid summer we just had.

i have had the idle problem the rpms dip really low and then comes back up but sometimesm mine goes up and down then gradually goes back to normal, mine has stalled on occasion but only a few times since i had the car

stalls

my MP5 wants to stall but before it does for some reason the idle jumps to 2 right before it's going to die out. I called mazda and they told me to change my air filter. But I usually change it when I do my oil if it seems dirty enough to me. I dunno wtf is wrong with the MAZDA SERVICE CENTER!!!(piss)

EXCATLY!

expect at 42k miles... going in this week sometime to investigate..

Mine stalled out at 1100 km sitting at a stoplight went to get on the gas and no power.... So I took it to the dealer and they replaced my main and fuel pump relays been running fine since

shaky idling happens to me often as well, but has never stalled
for those of you who has had it stall, what does the mazda dealer say about this? what is the problem exactly? seems weird that so many people are having this problem

I got a funny idle but then again I got cams. It did stall before I put them in once!

I fight the stalling issue everyday. It's my own fault though. Turbo, straight pipe, all sorts of other things done as well. I guess the motto is don't play if you can't pay.

Just to add to this post I just got home from the dealership and they had to replace my EGR vavle/sensor. I was having the same problem and the check engine light was on. Had to replace the Injen CAI with the stock parts first. It was well worth it. Oh well just wanted to shed a little more light on the subject.

So I had almost no gas left in the tank, or I was running with the light on for quite a while, when suddenly, I pull up to my friend's house and the car (Pro5) has a really rough idle and almost stalls.

I attribute it to not having gas. turn off the car and head inside. This was last Sunday. Well, it kept on happening until Tuesday, when it threw the CEL.

So I take my car into my dealership this morning to have both the CEL and the rough idle problem resolved. We'll see what happens.

Also, my car is a little over 1 year old, so I figured I'd get my 24,000KM checkup at the same time. I know I don't need it, but 150$ and they check everything.

I hope they don't make a big fuss about my short ram intake, catback and lowering springs, since they are going to change the oil, filter, air filter (would they really give me a new cone?) and verify suspension and alignment.

good news people!!!

Just got my Pro5 back tonight and thye changed the EGR Valve.
From what I've heard, there is a TSB for this in the USA, but nothing like that in Canada.

Anyhow, just to let you know, I had no problems with intake/exhaust/springs or anything like that. They changed the valve under warranty.

I love my dealdership so far, but I'm only 1 year into my buy. We'll see what the next 4 years do. I guess they treat you well when you get extended warranty.

i have has the idle problem for a while now....... never stalled but dips really low and shakes violently, maybe i will take it to the dealership before i put my turbo on to have it checked
