The stock manifold is very restrictive. Whats funny is that it is more restrictive once the secondary intake charge plates open. In theory it is supposed to make the runners longer and have the ability to capacitate more air charge thru the system. Unfortunatley when looking at the actual operation thru dynamic and static state it actually prevents better volumetric efficiency in my opinion by redirecting air flow thru a different path when you need it most. And that is at 4000rpm+ and open loop operation. The VICS plates open at 4750 rpm and the car will usually go into open loop depending on throttle position and load. It already has the velocity it needs to the port but unfortunatly the way the plenum and TB routing is designed it is not capable of breathing very well at the higher rpms. It was only meant to provide additional torque down low when velocity is key for optimal power. The throttle body is small in diameter also. Again the better an engine can process the air that it is given the more power you will make. Take a look at the honda manifolds and the way they are routed. You'll see that they can accomidate both low speed operation and high rpm flow thru the runners. The mazdaspeed cams would greatly benefit from the addition of a better manifold and throttle body. They have slightly increased duration so volumetric efficiency will be much higher in the lower to mid range rpm scale. It will reach peak efficiency much sooner in the rpm band and allow more HP potential.twilightprotege said:
