if you dont have much cash get a used ninja 250 or 500, $2000-4000.
If your getting screwed. I got my 2001 Katana 750 for $4K.

I didn't want my first bike to be something that I couldn;t wait to grow out of.
The kanata only problem as a starter bike is that its not hard to over push it in a turn at low speed and get the rear wheel to come loose. Any bike can do this but cold tires and too much power make it easier to do. Other then that I have had no real issues having this as a starter bike. It looks good and can accelerate, brake and handle if I need it to.

I'm basically in the same boat as you... I'm seriously considering picking up my first bike pretty soon. I'm leaning towards getting a Suzuki SV650S. Very light bike, great for twisties, and just enough power to keep you happy as a newbie...

But for under $1k you're pretty limited... Don't forget that the MSF course can cost a few hundred (depending on area) and DON'T skimp on the gear (another $500 at least)

everybody knows someone who died in a motorcycle wreck, but everyone also knows someone that died in a car wreck. The # 1 cause of death in motorcycle wrecks is blood loss... you never hear about those, only the biker that was drinking or hit buy a drunk driver. Wear protective clothing and be smart... dont try to impress anyone on your bike

just thougth I'd throw in my $.02..... 90% of my friends ride bikes, along with myself. We have had 4 deaths in the past 2 years. This is why:
1. ******* around and doing a wheelie on a busy street is a BAD idea
2. The person thought they were better than they were.

Remember, if you are going to start riding take it SLOW. Don't think that "hey Ive been on this thing for 2 months, I can do a turn at 110 mph." Ride with experienced riders, talk to people that have the same kind of bike, get pointers. If you are riding with people who are ******* around, doings tricks and stuff, they won't look at you funny because you are hanging back. Everyone was new once.
My buddy Kevin rides with us, hes had bikes for 8 years or so, and he STILL won't do any tricks. Just rides in back and rides to enjoy riding.
and PLEASE for the love of GOD dont ride in sandals, shorts or tshirts.

Lastly, don't think you won't dump. Don't be scared to dump. Everyone does at least ONCE in their life, mostly when they are learning. The smart ones do it going 40mph wearing leathers and a lid. But I guess that goes back to the whole take it slow speech.

and a little bump for myself... got an 02 CBR954rr for sale if anyones interested. $7k obo.

just like cars...be safe, and remember there are times and places where you can screw around. Just be SMART about it.

you guys sound like little pussies.....get a real bike nothin under 600
sport bike if your going crotch or cruise either way that is the smallest any one should go.

if you are 140-180 lbs 600cc's is fine but you will get friggin bored
180-250 750+ no problem just learn how to ride it.....its that simple

dont jump on any bike and try to wheelie the first time learn straights and then move up to twisties its not that big a deal.

my first bike was a 900 cbr rr and i have never dropped a bike i own a 750 now and its faster than the 900 i had....i have yet to wreck.....knocking on wood....
and i stunt to a degree.
