Who gots the most WHP N/A Protege?

I've opted for the twiggy spec custom cams - cos i know they work..but really they are just to tide me over until the "real" project begins..at that point i'll have to spec my own cams to support the silly things I have planned...

could vary quite a bit depending on the mods to the car and how you are looking to shape the powerband.

exactly...the specs are specific to what exactly you do to the engine...In a situation where you are dealing with a fixed head (i.e. no variable valve timing, duration, or anything) such as the FS...the cams profiles are extremely important...A huge hp number looks good, but what if you get that power in a 500rpm window? Proper cam specs for the specific build is what will allow you to decide what you want...You can give up a little on the peak number for a smoother torque curve...or vice versa...The cams I built for the modified engine bleed off enough compression they would allow an otherwise stock FS to not even idle...let alone the stock engine would not rev high enough to fully benefit of the scavaging incorporated into the overlap...

But aquiring these specs is what will take the research..To do it right you need to find out head flow, volumetric efficiency once the cylinders are modified, intake restrictions/flow, exhaust piping ID, primary length....the list goes on...There is tons of info though on NA cam applications that are easily applied to our engines...The best part is that when you are doing it the right way, you end up learning way more about your engine than you would ever want to...

in reference to SR cam gears and thier products..keep in mind, i haven't checked their site for a while, but if it's claiming 10-20HP, that could easily be generated from these...WHP, and HP are two different things..if they're claiming 20whp..they're full of s***.

but..20hp @the crank w/ a 20% loss to the wheels=16whp or so..the decrease in power from crank to wheel is between 20-30%...soo..

also, ij ust checked the site, i think they've got their asses covered, they're claiming like 8-15 or so hp..so..their claims stand backed.

general rule of thumb for drivetrain loss is between 15-25% depending on the trans ect. A manual is generally less than an auto.

I'm just pulling numbers out of my butt but, i would guess that through our 5spd is prob around 18-20 and for the auto its prob arounf 22%.

Anyone know for sure?

that's pretty close to correct..either way, i was just stating that thier numbers were pretty close.

thats bs "my car has 170hp and is as fast as a 350hp vete" yeah right
whos this aimed at? the message you quoted doesn't make sense.

170hp isn't stock to start with.

Secondly, power to weight. raw hp means nothing. A prime mover makes 900hp+...do you think its got even half a chance against a stock P5 on the quartermile? hell no.

wow this is an old thread.. nice to see it back alive.. I do got some good news for you guys. Since I got my new motor if i'll be needing to get my cams and cam gears reinstalled.. this time i'm going to do a pre dyno with everyone listed in my sig. minus the cams and cam gears.. then do another with the cams.. and one final for adjusting them.. i'll try my damnest to get you guys some charts so you have something to look at :)

Time frame isn't for sure yet as to when.. if anyone wants to donate some money i'll do it tomorrow :)
