Whistling noise

Hi, I have a 1.6 protege ZM engine 03.

There is a whistling sound coming from under the bonnet when I am going from first to second, this noise only happens after I press the clutch for 3 secs when changing from first to second not when switching from other gears??

Happened since car was last serviced, perhaps an airleak? Any ideas for things to check?

sounds like the engine winding probably, but I am not really sure. Does it have any other symptoms? do you have good pressure in the clutch lines? why press the clutch for 3 seconds if changing from first to second?

This whistling noise only happens when in 1st gear and the clutch is pressed and held for a while before switching to 2nd. Noise happens only when the car is moving, and not stationary.

Have not checked the clutch lines, could it be that there is not enough transmission oil in the gear box?

dont think so. It sounds like the engine may be winding up or down. maybe it is nothing, but I dont seem to notice anything like that on my car. how loud is it?

Not very loud can still hear it though with the windows down, and paying attention. What do you mean by engine winding up and down, did not do that before, u think it could be an air leak somewhere?

yeah if it is anything it would appear to be some sort of air leak or something. maybe one of the rubber gaskets has a tiny hole in it, and causes the hole to expand the slightest bit when pressing the clutch down. These cars are known for being pretty noisy when it comes to the cabin.

Cheers been down to see my mechanic. He said that the problem is a bearing in my waterpump, has gone no need to change pump yet just have to live with the noise.

If you know the bearing is bad I wouldn't wait until it completely goes before changing it. Then you'll end up with an overheated engine and warped head.
