Which Trailer Hitch? 2000lb Trailer and 2016 CX-5

I have a 2016 CX-5 and I need to move a 2000 lb travel trailer. I'm not sure which hitch...Curt 1, 2 or 3? I need to install it myself...Can't afford to pay someone, thanks.

Welcome @Peanutty25 Just a quick heads up...I see you posted duplicate threads, I merged them for you into this one...Best of luck and I hope you find the information you seek. :)

I would suggest a class III hitch over a class II since a class II would be maxed out in capacity plus it's easier to find accessories (bike rack, wheelchair lift, etc) for Class III .

e.trailer.com that Kedis82ZE8 linked is a great resource. I've bought a few hitches from them myself. Great prices, service and support 👍 . For installation, buy or rent an exhaust hanger removal tool to save yourself some headaches and a torque wrench.

At 2000 pounds, I would also consider having trailer brakes and installing a brake controller if it's going to be regularly pulled. If it's just a one time thing or just occasionally, you could likely go slow and be careful.

Oh, and welcome to mazdas247 👋 😁.

I'm on my 3rd CX-5, having previously owned two "GT" models and now a 2024 Turbo version. We used to have a hitch on the older model but it was only for a 1500lb garden utility trailer to haul leaves and brush to the dump, etc. I can confirm that with a 2000lb trailer you would be maxed out, weight wise. If it's just to pull it across town, you might get away without issues but if you're thinking camping trips where you plan to load that CX-5 down with a wife, 2 kids and a dog, plus an extra 300lbs of gear, food, propane bottle, etc. inside that "2000 lb" trailer, forget it. The CX-5 was never really designed to be a hauler and if one thinks they need to start upgrading brakes, springs, etc. you're better off swapping to out for a more tow friendly rig such as a 4Runner.

In accordance with CX-5 towing limitations I installed a class 2 Curt hitch. It's still rated for 3500 lbs and 350 tongue weight which exceeds Mazda towing limits . The 1-1/4 receiver isn't as versatile as 2" class 3, but for towing only, once a ball mount is installed it's good to go. I don't think a cargo rack or bike rack would work too well though.

This is a good point that immediately came to mind. Many people misread the rating for these cars. The limit is 2000 lbs with brakes, 1000 lbs without brakes for the US non-turbo models.
