Did my first change at 4000. Waiting until 5000 won't generally hurt the engine. Go with Synthetic oil and you can lengthen you service interval.

1st: 1000 miles (dino)
2nd: 3000 miles (dino)
3rd: 6000 miles (dino)
4th: 9000 miles (changed to synthetic mobil1)
annual tranny fluid change
5th: 12000 miles (synthetic mobil1)
6th: 15000 miles
7th (tomorrow): 17500 miles
tranny fluid change (redline/mercon V mix)

my school of thought: lubricating fluids help the engine run smoother since it decreases friction from particulates. the more often it gets renewed, the better the lubricating. $30 every 3 months is a small investment towards greater longevity. my mom's camry got changed every 3K miles on dino oil and is still going strong at 250K miles. the seals are all busted up now, but the engine itself is still as smooth as silk. the mazda tranny is notorious for lack of endurance, so i figure the more i change it out, the better it is for the tranny. mercon V is EXPENSIVE, going redline is actually cheaper.

Change it every 3 if you like your car.

uh, my cars got 3200 on it right now and I NEED to change it, damn. Will be the first change and Im using Mobil1 Full Synth.

mazda's website says every 5k miles if you use only engine oils with API SL or ILSAC GF-III service grade (or higher).

ok, changed it today...feel better now, but DAMN was that filter a PITA...had to take the front crossmember off to get any access to it, then hammer a screw driver into it, twist, make new hole, twist, make a new hole...finally after 3 times it was loose enough to hand twist...argh, what a b****...well at least I know it'll never be on that tight again.

Isnt it bad to change your oil so soon. I was made aware by many technicians, and people who work at car manufacturers that a special additive is put in the oil that comes from the factory...Its kind of like a preparatory lubrication for the first 3K miles. So changing to a regular oil w/o this might not be a good idea.

I swear some people have "oil change OCD" (laugh)

and some of them forget to ever change their coolant, tranny fluid, spark plugs, wires, rotate tires, etc...Not that you must do that stuff as often, but they never do it...

current mileage 9800km (5900 miles)

oil changes
1st - 1000km (600 miles)
2nd - 3600km (2150 miles)
3rd - 9100km (5400 miles)

all performed at dealer with OEM filters with Mazda 5w30

planning a change every 4000km (2500 miles) so my next one will be at 12000km.

I heard that puting synthetic oil in a new car was a bad idea because this higher viscosity oil hinders the engine from getting seated properly but after 10000km (6000 miles) synthetic would be ok. So on the next change, Mobile 1 Synthetic with OEM filters.

i swaped out the facotry oil at 900 with regular 5w30...then sychetic at 3k and every 3k ever since...im about to hit my thrid oil change.......also all new motors are broken in at the factory......i took it easy on my msp for the first 800 miles to let the clutch and tranny and everything else get broken in though

I just switched to 5w-30 full synth on my first change at 3K.

also, Im not 100% sure that ALL motors are broken in from the factory...There is a very strict 1000mile break-in period on WRX's...not sure about other cars, but I was lookin into buying one for awhile and thats one thing I found out about new ones...and used ones(You'd want to know if it was broken in properly)

yeh i hear all sorts of sotries.....all i know is i was easy on my car for 800 miles then i drained the oil to get any loose particles that worked out during breakin...also swaped out the tranny fluid at 800 miles for redline too....thats gonna get changed at 15k to gm scyromesh i think
