wheels and tires

Whats up mazda peeps

thanx for your help regarding the amp placement / snowboard racks, I have another one for ya

just took possesion of my p5 yesterday and needless to say it is the bomb, blows away my old bimmer in the curves, and accually quicker too! Im lovin it. I bought this thing with economy and practicality in mind mostly, something that will last a while and maybe be a little fun to drive. well it turns out it is more of a sports car than my old car, haha.. I love it.

My question is about wheels ant tires. The car came with 17" rota sub zero wheels, and yokohama AVS es100 215 / 40Z R17 83W tires, which will need to be replaced relitively soon, within 2/3k miles.

these tires seem to stick really well, BUT they are pretty low profile, and the road noise is horendous, especially at low speeds. I would like to strike a balance between performance and ride comfort / noise.

can any of you reccomend anything for this wheel size? do I have to have super low-profiles on this wheel size? how much bigger can I get without the tire hitting the wheel well when i make hard turns?

I have yokohamas on my old bimmer and I loved em, although they were regular profile and fit my whopping 14" rims :)

anyways any help in this matter is super appreciated!

take er easy,

check out the 'wheel fitment recipe' thread. it should answer most or all of you questions about tire size/rubbing issues.

with the 17's on your P5 you really do need to stick with a 40 series tire...or you will end up with problems rubbing.....just keep in mind the STOCK tires were 50's and on 16's...... I have the same tires you have now....and I don't get alot of road noise...wonder why you do.....course it may be there...but I have an ANTI-NOISE control on my dash that takes care of most any outside noise I don't want to listen to.....it came as standard equipment on all P5's....the knob is on the dash somewhat center and is labled....VOLUME! just crank it up and stay stuck to the road.

sirnuke he said he has 215/40/17 now so 205/40/17 will actually be a smaller sidewall than he currently has

besides, 215/40/17 is almost the perfect size for the speedo reading

short of getting smaller wheels, I think findoe is best off just dealing with the road noise. those es 100s are awesome; I hope to get some soon! I installed some powerful component speakers with their own amp to overcome road noise. I can drive on the freeway with the windows down and still hear my music! (rei)

findoe: if you live in socal I'd be willing to swap my stock wheels/tires with only 10k miles on them for those worn out tires and rims. they ride a lot better than aftermarket tires and rims and have little road noise, but just don't grip in the corners nearly as well.

you could also do a 205/45/17 and be pretty close with a little more sidewall
true, about .25" more all the way around... and for tire choice, I recommend Toyo Proxe 4's relatively quiet and perform well in most conditions

hmmm, well could it be cause they are so close to being completely worn out? I dunno.. hopefully its not something more dubious i.e. wheel bearings.. I had the car checked out but who knows. I really like these wheels but Im not big on 'rice' i.e. giant rims, tiny tires, coffee can exaust tips, etc. :) knowwhatimsayin? I'd like to get some performancey tires that are a little more mellow

thanx for the help guys

personally if you don't like the short sidewalls of the 17's....the other option would be go back to a 16 inch wheel....but I don't think that ANY 17 on our cars sporting 40's are rice by any streach of the imagination.....the fact that your tires are nearly worn out could have a bearing on the noise...but I doubt it. There are a lot of performance tires out there.....and pretty much all of them will give you some road noise....its the nature of the beast to having an aggressive tread pattern what will make your car feel like its glued to the road....

Yokohamas are louder then most. mine where at least! but damn did they stickin the dry weather!

Now i have Falken all seasons and they are quite and damn good for all season tires and at only 98 dollars a peice from sicount tire. But then again i have a MSP with 215 45 17. if you are interested call discount tire and ask them for a good quite tire and they will help you out. I have been dealing with them for 4 years and have never been dissapointed!

i hate Yoko's for the fact that they are loud, sticky tire, just way to loud. My two favorites for the money, Falken 512 and Fuzion ZR1. We carry alot of tires at my work and these two are the most popular by far. Great prices, good wear, good performance in dry and wet. Not the stickiest tires you can buy, but from a practical stand pt, they are probalby your best bet.

Ive got 2454018 512s on my car for the winter. Come spring ill got with the 451's on one set of wheels and the Azenis sports on another.

Alot of tires get noisy with age. Falken 512's or Kuhmo ASX would be a good choice for the 215/40/17. I had the ASX's and they were really quiet.

You could put a 215/45/17 on, but it might rub. I wouldn't consider 17's "rice" it's only a +1 size. Not like a civic going from 13" to 17"

toyo ts1's maybe, i dont know if its a noisy tire, buy everyone tells me they stick really good and have durability
