Wheel locks with Steel rims??

I recently had all 4 wheels stolen. Theft of winter tires is a big problem where I am now because the government recently passed a law that as of December 15, all vehicles must have winter tires.

I asked the dealer about wheel locks. He said, sure we can put them on, but they are not meant for steel rims and they will most likely seize and result in damage to the stud (I suspect damage taking them off). As such, mazda has told me that if that happens, the work will not be warranted.

So, I don't know what to do. Anyone have experience with this? They are stock steel rims (16")

i would just check with the local auto parts store and see if they have any locks that look like stock lugs. i wouldn't see where they would damage the wheel studs, but i am not in the wheel business.

I think I found the type I would need. The mcgard open ended lock nut, part # 24012, seems to be the right size for the mazda6 and since they are open ended, there'd be no issue with depth and placement on a steel rim. Anyonw know any Canadian retailers of these?

I just put my steelies on as well and was debating whether I should put mu wheel locks on, so the stock wheel locks cause damage? I don't see how??

I don't see how either, so when I get my car back from the dealer, I'm getting locks.

I saw two versions of the mcgard locks that I think apply.

part # 24012 (open end version, labeled as an "under hub cap" lock)

and part #24157 (standard). The wheel covers have holes for the lug nuts, so part #24157 should actually be fine.

So I think I've answered my own question finally. In Canada, Canadian Tire sells these, so I think tomorrow I'll be buying a set (provided I can find a place that has em in stock!)

I never heard of this issue....I just didn't put my original locks on because it looks kind of dumb sticking out more then the rest of them.....I am slightly nervous of them getting stolen though since I've heard from a few people now that got their wheels/tires stolen.

well, I've got my car back with new tires..they work great in snow. Only problem is, everywhere I turn, the mcgard locks are out of stock.
