Whats your RPM when going 60/70/80 MPH?

Wanted to get some feedback from current owners to get an idea how the gearing may have changed through the years.

Tire Size:

There are only two things that will affect engine speed @ certain mph - tire diameter and transmission gear ratio. I doubt anyone here has done anything to their gearing, so that leaves tire size only.

Here's my info -

Model Year: 2008
Transmission: 5 speed automatic
Tire Size: stock (205/50R17)
( 50rpm)
75mph = 2800rpm
70mph = 2600rpm
60mph = 2200rpm

Well there must have been some changes that caused the 08+ fuel economy to increase by 1L/100km. Gearing, more aerodynamic front end, better engine tuning, etc.

My 07 with 5 speed manual... (all values +/- 50)

60mph 2,850 RPM
70mph 3,300 RPM
100km/h (62mph) 2,950 RPM
120km/h (74.5mph) 3,550 RPM

My 2008 Toyota Corolla 5 speed manual did 2,500 RPM at 100km/h and 3,000 RPM at 120km/h... I would've preferred the same in the 5, 500RPM per 20km/h is a good ratio.

Since I live in the only major urban area in the entire US without a comprehensive freeway network passing through it, I have not been able to test the car at higher speeds since the thread was started, but with an '06 5MT and 215/50/17s, I register right around 2800 rpm @ 60 mph. I guess the increased diameter is good for saving me about 50 rpm at this speed. When given a chance, I will check the other speeds, too, and relate them to DKaz.

Almost 200 views yet only 4 responses (scratch)? Is the question too technical or do most passersby not own one (I’m guilty)? Thanks to folks who responded.

The MT’s seem to rev quite a bit higher.. Do they make good (as in comfortable, low NVH, good MPG returns) highway cruisers? Hopefully someone with an ’08-’10 MT gives some input.

Well, Silentnoise713, the 2.3L engine in my '08 GT (5-spd manual) has a smooth, quiet, and eager revving motor. I've found myself at times zipping down the highway having gotten caught up in paying attention to traffic only to find that I didn't shift to 5th and wouldn't have noticed other than the tach was a lot higher than it should have been. Beautiful motor.

As far as the higher revs of the manual go, I don't see it as a problem at all. If you take care to do oil changes when you should, the motor will last just as long, no mater the revs. I personally like the higher revs of the manual because it means less downshifting when passing because the motor has more revs.

I'm not sure that fuel economy is adversly affected either on the highway with the higher revving manual. My '08 has 105,000km on it now and most of them have been on the highway going 100-120km/hr. Wind direction is a way bigger factor in fuel economy than how high the engine revs. I almost think that this engine gets more efficient at using the fuel at higher RPM's. I've tried driving like a senior citizen for full tanks and I've driven fast and hard on others and you might not beleive this, the economy is about the same. When I travel over 120km/h the economy really does take a nose dive, but I don't see much difference at speeds below 120km/hr. I usually get around 8L/100km on the highway. If it's wintertime, or I'm driving hard it gets maybe as bad as 10L/100km. This motor doesn't seem to vary much in the economy that it gets, I find that my 5 is very consistant.

Hope that helps. Oh, by the way I have 215/50-17 tires and it revs about 2950rpm at 100km/h. I know I'm going exactly 100km/h but I have no idea how accurate the tach really is. It doesn't help that there are 4 divisions between 2500 and 3000 rather that 5 (that would have made sense, can't have that haha).

Seems the 08+ didn't have any gearing changes. Seriously wonder how they're more fuel efficient.

BTW, I love my 5 on the highway. Really smooth, comfortable to drive. At 85mph, it's more wind noise than motor noise that's the issue even though it's over 4,000 RPM at that point, but I usually take it easy at 65-70 as I value getting better mileage so it's perfectly comfortable.

I'm betting its the variable timing then. It kicks in around 3500 I believe, and increases hp (and most likely decreases fuel economy) so keeping your engine below that point while cruising should max out your mileage. Hence my getting 21 mpg when driving 80 mph across AZ in the interstate (4000+ rpm)
