Whats your 3rd gear top out at?

i wasn't saying i could explain myself or that it even makes sense to me, im just saying what i have observed in the past. 1 day, 70mph @3500 , next after exhaust, 70mph @ ~3400. if the clutch slipping had anything to do with it, it would make the rpm's higher after more power, since the clutch would be slipping more with the added hp.

Ummm.

1-you could quadruple HP and your car will still do the same MPH at a given gear and RPM. PERIOD. Unless you change GEARING, it will remain the same. They are LOCKED.

2-Revving your car to 7K RPM is not only dangerous, but silly. You're losing tons of power LONG before 7K RPM. This isn't a video game, it's a real car.

How is 7krpm rev as dangerous as opposed to a 6.5k rpm rev?

I forget the equation (it's in Maximum Boost), but you're putting WAY WAY WAY more stress on your engine from those 500 extra RPM. You could, for example, have twice as much stress on your rods @ 7K RPM than you would at 6500. Again, that's probably not true, but my point is that it's extremely significant. The equation for stress on your engine isn't a linear one in terms of RPM. Not by a longshot.

And again, even redlining our cars is silly. Any dyno chart will show you why.

Was your AC on?

no, ac never worked in that car, and even so how would ac being on change the gear ratios? 70mph=70mph, right?

hey hondatomazda..i own an mp3 and can hit at least 85-87 or so in 3rd gear @7k...but never do it cause its like some ppl have said...not really a good idea...thats why there is a redline set at a certain point

I have to go to redline in second. Never in third... Actually, I have never hit fuel cut. I have taken second to ~7700 and never hit fuel cut...

They wouldn't, smartass.

70mph=70mph, right?

Right, but it could put some kind of extra load on the engine which may make the tach magically read higher or something. Either way, like I said, they're locked.

Just a datapoint... I hit 91 in 3rd today at the fuel cut. weeeeee

I thought this post might be about whether the change in the ECU would change the shift points to maximize acceleration. But, that's not how it's asked. So, I don't know what this thread is about but, thought I'd add my datapoint since I just did this about an hour ago.

Good luck,
Carl

so magic is the answer? :p
i know they're locked, im just sayin i have yet to see an explanation as to why this happened, and it has happened on more than 1 car apparently, other than magic.

Gear ratios are a mechanical issue, and have nothing to do with the PCM.

Agreed. It shouldn't matter since it is all mechanical. I wish I could tell you the magic answer as to why you're seeing an increase in speed at the same RPM.

7k seems kinda high, but I haven't been that high yet. I've been using the same shift points as in my MX-6 (right around 5500. Brought me back to 4500 which was peak torque on the FS-LE engine). I always thought you wanted to shift where the next gear would be fall into or near max torque RPM.

Oh well, looks like I'm putting the car up anyway. Half dollar sized snowflakes are falling as I Type.

Good luck... now my Mazda IS frozen (hahaha).
