Ok guys going to fit a short throw shifter to the car but the big thing is which one?
The guys at TWM said that the new one they do has 50% less shift throw that sounds good so tell me all about the little suckers which one will i fit.

tunnel , have you thought of removing the extension on the stockie? i've done that and works great. even better, it's free :D

we did that to my friend's protege. looks great, but it's not a "true" short shifter in that it doesn't actually reduce the length or throw of the shift itself.

I know what you mean, but actually when you think about it, the shorter the shifter is, the less distance your hand is making everytime you change gears. Therefore, if you remove the extension, it should be shorter. I'd still recommend a Kartboy though. I love the MSP shifter (90% of the time) & all I'm doing is adding the Kartboy bushings.

black majik your right, it does shorten the throw.

if anyone knoes the length of the stock shifter from the ball to the tip i could work out by what percentage

It doesn't move the fulcrum point but shortens the lever. It'll be lower and still a pretty long throw and harder to shift inch for inch compared with a short shifter. Go with the TWM or Kartboy and be sure to pick up the kartboy bushings. I tried shifting my kartboy before i installed the bushings and was dissatisfied, and once I put the bushing in it was great :D

thank you for going into the basic science behind it :) cutting the shifter is purely cosmetic

let me just do a basic mathematical senario for you all to prove the shortened stock shifter does reduce the throw.

the figures i have used as guestimates only....

say the stock height of the shifter (from ball to top of the thread) is say 20cm (8 inches)
now if that were to go all the way around in a circle, that would have a circumfrance of 125.66cm (49.47 inches)

now since the extension of the stock shifter is say 5cm (2 inches), it's circumfrance would now be 94.25cm (37.11 inches)

you have therefore reduced the through by the following

1 - (old circumfrance / new circumfrance)

= 25%

whether you like it not, maths does not lie. the throw of the shifter has reduced by 25%.

ok, i understand what are you saying, but the section on the shift lever that curves below the "ball" (the part that goes to the linkage) of the shifter is made different on a short shifter. that reduces the actual "throw" not just the physical tossing of the level. having compared a cutdown shifter to an actual short shifter in a protege, i can tell you that they feel nothing alike.

TheMAN, in all his knowledgable arrogance :), made an excellent post about this some time back.

ive got the kartboy shortshifter .. i cant complain. when its first installed its someone stiffer than stock shifter, but you get used to it real easily, and the throws are A LOT shorter.

yeah, that's how they give an even greater reduction in throw...make under the ball longer....even if it's by 1cm or something, it'll make a huge difference

Or you can just look at different points on a fan blade. :p

I can't agree that you have shortened the throw of the shifter by shortening the length above the fulcrum. The throw is strictly determined by the length below the fulcrum. When you shorten the lever above the fulcrum, you are reducing the arc described by your hand when moving the shifter. That is, you are reducing the amount of distance your hand moves-not the throw of the shifter. That is mathematically impossible.

I installed an MP3/MSP shifter in my sedan which is over an inch shorter than stock length ,along with the Kartboy bushings, and it feels much better than stock. My hand moves less but the throw is the same. If the shifting feels quicker, it's only because your hand moves a shorter distance.

has anyone experienced the shifter w/o the extension, then after some while bought an aftermarket ss and compared the 2?
is it worth spending $100 on a shifter?

as i stated above, i've done it to my friend's protege. the difference between his and mine is very evident. i would say go for it
