What would you do about this?

My wife was nice enough to have my car detailed for for my birthday today. She goes to pick up the car and sees something odd with the radio display. She calls me to ask if there was ever some sort of fluid in the display before. I say no and she tells me it's very noticeable. I have her go back to the detailer and he gives her some bulls*** story that they don't use any sort of liquids cleaning the dashboard (they must use special pixie dust). So, below are the pics. They don't clearly show how annoying it is. Obviously, they sprayed the cleaner and some of it leached down into the LCD display. I don't know if I can get this out or not, or if it will eventually kill the display altogether.

On top of that, the asshole didn't even clean my wheels! What kind of detailer does that? There's brake dust all over them. There are a few other areas (the Pillar behind the driver's side, between the two doors not cleaned) he " missed." And this is a guy who's been in business for 24 years.

Anyway, looking for opinions. Can this be fixed by me? Can I pull the small panel off and somehow dry it out? Do I get it replaced? Do I send a hit squad after the guy? What would you do?

i would take it back to the detailer personally....they are prolly just trying to pull a fast one on your wife....

Yeah, someone sprayed the screen directly, instead of spraying a cloth first.

Yeah, I just don't know exactly what to have him do, though, about the display.

well, maybe you can tell him that you'll let it pass if it dries up, but if it doesn't, then you want them to replace it. and get that in writing too.....

Excellent idea.

BTW, the fluid is BEHIND the LCD display. If you press on the display it doesn't move, so the fluid is behind the thin LCD layer and the backlight.

The good thing is that it seems to be settling. When I got in the car this morning, there was about half as much fluid. My only main concern in that it could short-circuit something in the radio.

The guy actually said he was going to give us a full refund, which I don't really feel good about.

Any idea how much a replacement radio would cost?

I don't necessarily think it's fluid...I think that it might be an air bubble or something in the film that covers the LCD screen. But anyway, take it back to the detailer and explain to them that it was not like that when you brought it in, and it was like that when you took it home. It's obvious that something happened in their shop, and they should pay to fix that display. If that doesn't work, take it to the dealership and try to get it replaced under warranty. No matter what route, it shouldn't do that. Air/liquid should never be allowed to get into that display...it should be completely sealed. It's worthy of a warranty replacement in my opinion.

So, just got a quote on replacing the DISPLAY alone and it's $364.48.

I'm hoping it's nothing and the rest of the fluid disappears without frying anything....

I assume that is a dealer quote. It's a good idea to get documentation from a dealer regarding the problem, a big + for credibility of your claim against the detailer if it comes to legal action.

No, it was NOT an air bubble. It was clearly fluid and was there because of whatever they used to clean the dash had gone into the slit in the dash right above the display. Also, it was BEHIND the LCD layer.

Anyway, by the time I got into my car last night to come home from work, it had pretty much disappeared. Still going to talk to the detailer on Monday, but I think this will be OK.

First of all, how much did you spend on the "detail"? I personally run detail center and wash. If you only dropped $20 - 30 for a detail, don't expect the works.

I don't know of any chemicals (that we use) which would do that to a screen. I clean my car twice a week, and have never had a problem like yours.

for a new radio your looking at minimum about 1200 bucks

i work in a hyundai parts dept, and you should see the absurd prices for the head units.

i had to get pricing on a headunit for an 05 corolla and OUR cost was 1195 with the list price 1495.

If everything is still working it likely has not affected the unit. Wet electrics will show up real quick. (Like when I steam clean my engine!! OUCH!!)

No idea. At least a hundred.

What do you use to clean dash? I'm pretty sure they used some sort of cleaner and it ran down the dash and then leached in between the LCD and backlight panel.

The price I got was from my Mazda dealer. for the display only. A new radio was $400 from them.
