what would cause this (radio not turning on)

I started my car this morning and the radio was not on. i left it on...the display for temp and info center was working fine, but in the middle audio section there was no text or info, and all it said in the usual small text was 'cd in'.

when i pressed the power button, the lights on either side of the knob did their thing, and when i pressed it again, they lit up in sequence the other direction.

i tried turned the car off, then on, played with it a few times and nothing the entire trip to work.

at work i pop the fuse box top, and peep the audio fuse and ETC fuse. i've never looked at these before. they are fine. i remove the audio fuse to look closely through the top and it's ok. same with the 10a ETC fuse, which i am unsure if that has anything to do with audio.

i get back in the car, turn the ignition on and nothing. press power, and it turns on.

what could cause that?

i've had my stereo stuff installed for almost a year at this point- sirius sportster 5 with hardwired interface, alpine amp, mtx re-q, etc.

from the time it didn't work this morning to the time it did, nothing changed other than me pulling the fuse to check it.

???(dunno)???

Did you try turning the volume up? I made that little mistake once after disconnecting the battery on a different car. Thought I messed something up until I turned up the knob.

i believe i did turn the knob several times to see if i heard any fuzz or something from the speakers. nothing, dead. i know the audio wasn't working at all because the center section of the display panel, reserved for audio, was not working whatsoever. the center section was blank orange. if the head unit is on, which it should have been as indicated by the lights next to the volume knob, there would have either been text in the center of that display displaying CD track info OR the radio station my Sirius is tuned to. it showed nothing, it was blank. also, the eject button would not spit out any CD's. it was just not working no matter what i did.

very odd!

I've seen it on my sister's mustang. For her it was a cd stuck in the changer and we had to take the head unit out to get it fixed.

Yah seems like an intermittent problem that you really can't or shouldn't even be troubleshooted since you still have a warranty. Actually, now that I remember, my friend had an Audi factory radio that did the exact same thing. The whole unit would just be dead INTERMITTENTLY, most of the time it worked but once in a while it would just quit exactly the same way yours did; no display, no sound. Checked the fuse and it was fine but upon putting the fuse back, the radio would magically work again. Unfortunately in your case, if it's intermittent, it will be hard for the dealership to acknowledge the problem. If it bothers you enough, the best bet is to just leave it be the next time it quits on you and bring it in and pray they'll just replace it under warranty. Just play dumb and don't mention the fuse at all.
