What type of Header is the best|||

My friend said that for automatics a 4-2-1 is better and for manuals the way to go is a 4-1 since they don't need any bottom end power. Is this true?

not true....unless your friend was referring to an engine that revs to 9000rpm +

the fact of the matter is that 4-1 headers are designed purely for very high rpm power. the 2.0L cant get high enough to get the benefits out of a 4-1.

put simply, a 4-2-1 header is the best for a street driven car. it's all about area under the torque/hp curve

I agree with twilight our engines do not rev that high for the exhaust pulses to clear. A 4-2-1 is the best, and if possible 2pc for ease of install.

If someone was trying to make power between 5000 and redline, which would be better? It's based on primary size and length from the head to the collector. I guess flow numbers for the headers would be needed to be absolutely correct.

so what kind of car would rev above 9k to get the benifits of a 4-1 header. and the way i look at it, our cars are so slow anyways, does it matter which header you use, neither one is going to help out a ton, so just get one that looks good!

no1stunna - honda's.

macs - yep true. but to get the 4-1 primaries the right length for our cars will cost development money. would be cheaper just to buy what already works well - the awr

Im looking at buying a new header for my car, 01 mp3 and i was probbaly just going to go with the HP racing header, i mean its the cheapest ive looked at so far...im just asking any mp3 owners who have a header installed on their ride...how hard was it to install it? how much did it cost? did you notice a gain? im just shopiing around and im open for ideas... thanks guys :D

sometimes cheap doesnt always mean better.

i myself, am going with a racing mazda header passed down to me.

with these headers we will still throw a check engine light, right? are there any headers that won't?
Wagner, Essential Speed(shortie) Niether should throw a CEL. You can use any of the headers and get a CEL eliminator, except with the Wagner and Essential, which keep all cats and O2 sensors.

Just got a picture of the new 4-2-1 header from Kevin. This a 2pc type with high flow cat. It is s.s and coated for around $750 CAN or approx $525 US. That is cheaper than the AWR which is now selling for over $550. Guess who is going to get my money|

Any more information regarding the header/ high flow cat combo? This is precisely what I'm looking for. Thanks.

you can go with the wangermotorsports set up they have a header and a hi-flow cat combo.

Het Warpath, if you e-mail Kevin at essential speed he can send you a picture of the header. It is not completed yet (coated and polished) but gives you an idea of how it looks. I think he makes his own cats. I quoted wrong price, the header works out to be $562 US plus shipping. That is the same price as the AWR, but you get more bang for your buck (high flow cat, and coated) from Kevin

Wanted to post this lift from Protege Club thread on same topic.

It's recommended reading for anyone considering header/exhaust system changes. Excellent info. :)

Essential speed equal length header

Mazda Protege 5-2.0L :equal length header
equal length design retains the stock cats for emission passable direct bolt on to existing first cat. has proved to gain 8-10 whp with an increase of 20ft/lbs of torque.A bonus..moves the power band 700rpms lower!! ceramic coated and polished

How can you gain horsepower when the revs are shifted lower? This doesn't seem like a "performance" enhancement, even though the torque is increased.

Any ideas?

probably would be better because the area under the curve has increased

but i doubt the 20ft/lbs claim. very much doubt
