What tools are useful to remove the engine oil filter?
I might start doing it myself.

When I changed the oil for the first time the oil filter was tight from the factory. I don't overtighten the replacement filters and they are no problem.

The instruction on the box says (typed verbatim; don't ask why they capitalized words):
  1. Apply a Thin Film of Oil to the Surface of Gasket Before Screwing on.
  2. Tightening Torque: 12 – 16 N-m
(Tighten 3/4 Turn after Gasket Contacts Base.)
But you can bet your britches that bad boy was way tighter than that from Hiroshima. The strap wrench was required or it wasn't coming off. And it still took me quite a few repositions to get it moving.

Now I try to get the 3/4 turn in with just my hands and that is plenty because it's pretty tight at that point.

I'm considering getting one of those claw-type wrench adapters if it makes the job easier.

I hand tighten mine every time, but you best believe I have to bust this bad boy out to loosen it. I usually put a shop rag on this when I grasp the oil filter cup. Makes loosening it a breeze.

If you don't want to buy one of those clampy tools above, a rubber glove should do for you, as they're only supposed to be hand-tight. Might need to clean grease off, or simply wrap some low-grit sandpaper on it for grip.

I wear gloves and haven't been able to get a filter off yet without a tool.

Side note, changed the oil in the MX-5 and was surprised to find it uses the same filter as the N/A CX-5. 1WPE-14-302.

I use a pair of oil filter pliers to loosen the filter. It just takes less effort with pliers.

Aside from the pliers, you'll want a basic socket and ratchet set to remove and tighten the drain plug. 3/8" drive is a good all-around size. A flathead screwdriver and Philips head screwdriver may be needed to remove any underbody panels blocking access to the filter and drain plug. A hydraulic jack and a pair of jackstands to raise the front end of the car (or a pair of ramps). A drain pan to catch the oil - I personally use a plastic drain pan that doubles as a container. A plastic funnel for filling the oil. Shop towels/rags for cleanups and for wiping the dipstick to check your oil level. Oh, and a pat on the back for doing it yourself (y)
