MSP 2003.5
Any suggestions? i've heard a lot of good things about JL audio but will any of their massive drivers fit in the MSP mount?

my stock sub was blown to bits and i really miss having nice bass bump from the trunk (hear ya)

I really like my JL sub. I have a 12W6V2. My rm has two JL's (same kind) he really loves his. I am not sure if it will fit in the enclosure. Plus you will prob have to amp it (if you dont already have an amp). I also know the elemental designs stuff sounds good. My buddies have the 12A and 15A (I think that is the one with the flat nomex cone) they also sound great.

THe JL audio 8W3v2D2 will fit and will be the perfect impedance and power handling ability.

Is is a big improvement over the stock sub? I've replace the sub amp and that helped a bit but still. I like my trunk space so I'm trying to decide whether I should try replacing the stock with the JL audio 8" or just get a small sealed ED 10" box.

It will have superior SQ and about a 3 db increase is volume do to the lower impedance. It will also last alot longer. However, the stock inverted amp might not. Flip it right side up and it will be fine.

i want to keep the stock enclosure but nevertheless you're one more person saying good things about JL quality.

thanks 1st, i'm thinking about ordering it now...

Just to reiterate the comments, the JL8w6v2D2 (wired in series) will present a 4ohm load to the MSPs stock amp, which will make it output 125W RMS, a perfect match!

Now...the reason 1st says to turn over the amp, is because it's flipped upside down so the heat radiating off the heatsink would cook it. Fortunately, or rather unfortunately, Kenwood thought of this and instead of turning the amp right side up, they gave us all 8ohm subs so we were only getting 62.5W RMS, but the amp wouldn't fry. Anywho...now you know why you need to mount it the other way.

it shouldn't be complicated to do so, just flip it over and find some longer screws or nuts/bolts to secure it right side up, suspended with enough room for the heat to dissipate. :D

The only problem with eD's 8A is that the sub is too deep. You could probably rig it so that it fit, though...but I think 125W is just too little for that beasty! (evil)

it's cold out that should keep the sub alive till I get my lazy butt to move that sub.

arkitek I've heard 8" JL can sound as deep as many 10"s. IMO use the enclosure you already have.

servoeyes thanks for the detailed description. i might flip it at the same time as the sub install then...

again...if trunk space is a worry there are options like my install ~~~>link or also jrodhotrod's install link(which is based off of 1st MP3's first install in his MP3)

Yeah I definitely want to keep it stock and simple by adding the JL 8". Just wasn't sure of the improvement but now I think I will go ahead with this after reading the opinions here. Didn't want to do it then realize it's not good enough. Thanks guys. Anyone know of a good cheap place to order one?!

Know anyone that works at a JL dealer? That's honestly the only place that I would buy one. That way you buy it there and have it installed and it's covered for a couple years incase something goes wrong. Otherwise you've gotta risk doing it ebay, seen? That's because JL doesn't have any online vendors.

Exactly the thread I was looking for. Definitely want to replace my stock sub with something high quality but without a lot of rewiring and the JL 8W3v2 sounds like a perfect fit. One question though. When I went to JL's website the sub they listed is the 8W3v2. Pardon my car audio ignorance, but is this the same as the 8W3v2D2? Or is the D2 a special application?

The D2 is to signify that it's a Dual Voice Coil with both at 2 ohms. You wire them in series and get a 4 ohm load. :D Like I said...just make sure you flip that kenwood amp right side up once you do that!

Gotcha, flip the sub and D2 equals dual voice coil. Thanks a lot, hopefully I'll be able to get mine ordered on Monday, be even sexier if they had one in stock, but it's Hawaii so I'm gonna guess no.

hehe...not flip the *sub*...flip the *amp*! (evil)

(hand) Doh! Yes, yes, flip the amp, not the sub. And people intrust me to defend the country. lol. Thanks again.

OK so i went to the MyerEmco in Fairfax today and had them put in a 8w3.

this thing rocked! it sounded tighter than any 8" i've heard in the past. I could hear and feel a nice controlled range when listening to my music. And the fit with the stock enclosure is a perfect match (as 1st had suggested thanks 1st!)

i said rocks in the past tense because it blew up 4 songs into my trip home. I went back, they checked it out and said it's the AMP that's killing the subs. they quickly replaced the driver but we decided to leave it disconnected until i can get a new AMP. they also offered an equivalent alpine amp for about $120 but I'm just going to wait for Mazda to replace it.

3-4 more weeks without bass...

i was talking to the installer about this. they thought the heatsink on the amp was sufficient. He also mentioned a modern amp like this one would simply cut off not fry. what do you think?

Damn, that's weird, your Amp has an appetite for subs I guess. I mean I don't push my stock system too hard, but I never really thought the stock Amp had the nuts to kill a sub. Hmmm.

BTW, if you don't mind me asking how much did the JL sub cost you?
