That'll do it.

Welcome to the forum. You will get 100 different answers and 50 of them will include the word "Search"

If you really want sound advice and not random do-this-first answers, ask yourself:

1) What do I want for my end result
2) What kind of budget do you have/plan to have
3) Start saving and working toward that goal

After you do this, come back and I promise that all the vendors, including myself, will pounce on you like lions on an injured baby impala on the African Savannah.

Yeah. I watch a lot of cable.

its so true :) (if you would like my personal list you can email me Matt@mazda3online.com)

exhaust system!!!
That's what's made the most difference in mine so far. Good choice if you can swing it financially. Exhausts, especially the good ones, don't come cheap.

Haha, QFT.

IMO, if you ultimately want a fast car, the only real way to do so in a Protege is with boost. And if that's the case, start saving.

If you're ok with a low power car, then intake/exhaust/headers/intake manifold are a good start.

As for handling, I really like Espilir springs on Illuminas. I sell Illuminas and can probably get you Espilirs as well if you're interested.

Sure you just wouldn't rather dump in a mouse motor???
And the Ford 9"er?

Aight enough of "sarcasm" remarks guys. Everyone was at the newb point. Stop hating and start giving advices like Protephile and Kooldino did. If you are tired of newbs posting same question all over again, then please either say friendly "please search" or don't post because you will draw new people away. We are about helping out each other here not bash on one another.

Back on topic.
1st, Zakknafein welcome to the forums man. Glad to have ya on board. I hope that you will find this place as fun/entertaining and informative just as the rest of us do. Search feature is an extremely useful tool here, but if you can't find the answer that you need, then ask away and lots of people will help you out as much as their knowledge allows them to.

As far as nitrous....stay far far away from any shape or form of nitrous. Proteges don't like it at all. End result will be a blown motor and alot of headaches.

Welcome Zak...(hi)

Props to DiS and mp3 for handling this thread well...Keep up the good work guys!

welcome to the forums..although i've been modding my car for a while, it seems that i've gotten nowhere..the main issue being that i've not gotten to drive it since i've put the new motor in;) BUT, don't let yourself get discouraged, because the end result will be a great one. the protege is a great car, although the powerplant is minimal, and blown motors happen often, if you get a decently built block, and do all mods correctly w/ tune, they can be semi reliable with decent power, there's a number of guys on the forum with cars like this, KOOLDINO is one, as well as PROTEPHILE. there are plently. get used to bashing, each has their own taste, and guys on here don't hesitate to tell you how THEY think it is. BIG E-PENIS'..it's alright though. continue your efforts and keep it up. glad to have another fellow protege guy on the boards.

WELCOME.

Welcome to the family. There has been some good advice given already. My two cents (FWIW), first upgrade your suspension and brakes. Whether you decide to boost your power or not, that will make the car even more fun to drive and allow you to maintain control with more power. There are plenty of choices for suspension, the only limit is your budget. I would recommend you steer clear of the cheap eBay springs, you get what you pay for and no one wants a broken car. You can then go with better sway bars front/rear and a front strut tower brace if you don't already have one. First thing I always upgrade on my brakes are the lines, go with braided stainless and that alone will improve the feel. Add a good set of pads and you will be set for some time.

Other small but nice to have improvements are a short shifter with bushings and variable intermittent wiper stalk. Don't know if you mentioned what trim level you have, but parts do interchange so say if you want the seats out of an upper trim level they will go right in.

Good luck with your mods.

First thing I did was get a KnN air filter... it is a really cheap and noticable increase for the car.
